Haley | 222 comments Max stiffens as she gives him a hug, doing his best impression of a plank of wood. "Mhm." He says. "Like you would be able to be trained as a Ranger without the proper attire."

message 252: by [deleted user] (new)

She sat down wrapped in her new cloak. "So. What's new with the world?" She asked motioning to the pile of papers on the table

message 253: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max looked down at the papers again. "Robberies, thieves, stuff like that. There's a new threat to another fief, but that shouldn't affect us at all. And there's something shady going on in the king's castle, and they're investigating more into that. Nothing that affects us much." He said.

((Should they get assigned the shady actions at the castle or no? I thought that could get interesting....))

message 254: by [deleted user] (new)

((lets do it :D))

Penny nodded listening. "Sounds like some people are going to be busy" She leaned back with a small smile. She stretched yawning quietly. "Want me to make dinner?"

message 255: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max glanced up at her. "Think you can? Sure, if you want to." He smiled at her, a smile that could almost be called a smirk. "You cook it, you gotta clean it." He said.

message 256: by [deleted user] (new)

She rolled her eyes"Fine by me" She hopped up and walked into the kitchen area. She started chopping potatoes and other various vegetables. She grabbed a small pot and threw the veggies in. She put it over the fire stirring until they were lightly browned. She pulled the pot off and started making the other half of the meal

message 257: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max watches her prepare dinner for a minute, then turns his attention back to the papers, reading again the part about the castle. It says that they're going to be assigning a Ranger there soon, but it didn't tell who it was going to be.

message 258: by [deleted user] (new)

She finished cooking the meat and assorted the veggies around it on the two plates. She grabbed silverware and served his food.

message 259: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments ((So should they find out the next day or wait a week or two so that she's not completely untrained?))

message 260: by [deleted user] (new)

((we can wait a week or two :3))

message 261: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments ((Ok.))

Max looked up as she walks in, carrying the food. "Hm." He says. "Smells good. Hope you didn't poison it." He stacks to papers together, setting them on the edge of the table.

message 262: by [deleted user] (new)

She raised an eyebrow"Why would i waste good food with poison?" She sat down and started eating.

message 263: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max nods, then takes a bite. "Of course." He said after he'd swallowed. He then lapsed into silence as he ate.

message 264: by [deleted user] (new)

She finished eating then sat back full. She gathered her dishes and took them to the wash pot and started scrubbing. She hummed to herself as she dried the clean dishes

message 265: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max finished his, then got up and washed his plate and silverware. When he was through drying them, he sat back down at the table, sighing slightly as he turned his attention back to the papers that couldn't be ignored.

message 266: by [deleted user] (new)

She came back into the room. "Anything else before i hit the hay?" She asked yawning a bit.

message 267: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max shook his head, glancing up. "Nope." He said. "Good night. Sleep tight." He said, putting the papers on the table and standing. "I think I might just do the same."

message 268: by [deleted user] (new)

She nodded "Sounds good. Goodnight" She headed to bed falling asleep almost immediately. She didn't stir until the sun rose the next morning

message 269: by [deleted user] (new)

.

message 270: by [deleted user] (new)

((You there?))

message 271: by [deleted user] (new)

(( Helllooooo :, ( ))

message 272: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments ((I'm sorry! I've been busy, and distracted, and I started a new anime. Surely you know how that goes. I sincerely apologize!))

message 273: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max went to his own room, made his preparations for bed, then fell asleep. He woke before the sun rose. After he'd gotten ready, he walked out of his room and peeked out a window. The sun was just starting to show its face over the horizon, and he began making preparations for the day.

message 274: by [deleted user] (new)

((ooh! that's okay ^-^ i was just worried you had grown bored haha ))

message 275: by [deleted user] (new)

Penny rolled out of bed, tired. She slumped out of her room and collapsed onto a chair before yawning "Morning.m " She said sleepily

message 276: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max glanced over at her. "Good morning." He said with a smile. "What're you tired about? A Ranger doesn't sleep deep. They don't wake up sleepy." He said. "Now then. Since you're all rested, how about we start your training with getting some water, hm? Build up some muscles. The barrel's on the porch, the bucket's over there." He motioned to the bucket.

message 277: by [deleted user] (new)

She groaned "Sorry im just super exhausted...Ill get my sleep under control " She smiled slightly before hopping up. "Be back soon!" She grabbed the bucket. Once she was at the river she started scooping water when she heard a rustling. She looks up to see the four boys from the castle.
The tallest one smirked "Look what we found boys. The little sneak. " They started coming towards her and she grabbed her bow on the ground nocking and drawing quickly. They pretended to be scared "awww is little sneak gonna poke us with her little sneak sticks?"
Penny narrowed her eyes and let it go. It thudded a couple inches away making the boy jump "Youre so getting it you little freak" he snarled.
Two of the boys grabbed her before she could get another arrow. The bigger one came over to her and punched her in the gut hard. She sucked in a breath and fell to ber knees where the others began to kick her repeatedly

message 278: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max's eyes followed her as she walked toward the river. He had the sudden thought that he hadn't told her where the river was. He shook his head slightly as she disappeared from view. She'd find her way. He continued what he was doing, but couldn't help but grow slightly worried as time stretched. She should've been back with her first bucket by now. He grabbed his bow, then made out to follow her. Maybe it wasn't healthy to be this worried about his apprentice, but he'd already grown protective over her. He walked to the river, just in time to see Penny getting punched in the gut. With no hesitation, he stepped into sight. An arrow was already nocked on his string, and the unwavering point was pointed on what he assumed to be the leader of the gang, though he hadn't drawn it back. "Stop. Now. If you all don't want to die, then you'd better run." He said decisively.

message 279: by [deleted user] (new)

The big boy glared "You better leave old man. Before you get the same treatment " The other boys joined in agreement. Penny sat up shakily and went to stand but one boy kicked her down again "Who said you could get up?"

message 280: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments He watched as Penny was kicked down again, and his arrow turned toward the boy who'd kicked her. He let the arrow fly, the tip finding its home in his leg. "There. You kicked her, you get an arrow in your leg. You punch her, you get an arrow in your arm. I'd say that's fair." He nocked another arrow, and he raised his eyebrow to the others, daring them to touch her.

message 281: by [deleted user] (new)

He wailed in pain and Penny kicked his other let making him fall. She stood up and tackled the big boy to the ground. She punched him hard before he threw her off and pinned her. The others watched unsure if they were to join in or not. They were afraid of getting and arrow in them. Penny gasped for breath in his choke hold and grabbed a handful of dirt and threw it in his face. He cried out rubbing his eyes allowing Penny to roll out and kick him hard sending him reeling. She stood up breathing hard. She glanced around and located her bow a couple feet away. She kicked him hard one more time to insure he wasnt getting up. She grabbed it and the arrow next to it nocking and drawing walking over to him. He started backing "Please dont shoot me!" He pleaded. Penny glared at him and swallowed hard she released the arrow, the boy screamed expecting to be skewered but when he opened his eyes he saw the arrow beside him, sunk into the ground. He shuddered at the thought of it being in him instead
"If i ever see any of your faces again i swear to whatever god you believe ill put an arrow through your brain faster then you can say mercy" Penny wiped blood off her mouth and walked away furiously. She knew Max could handle em from there.

message 282: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max watched the quarrel against the boy and Penny, his unwavering arrow trained on the boy as he put her in a chokehold, but he didn't let go. He would if he had to, but he wanted to see if Penny would think of something to get her out of the situation. His patience didn't go unrewarded. He watched as the dirt was thrown, smiling slightly as Penny located her bow and shot it at him. She was definitely more merciful than Max was; if it were him, than the arrow would've found itself buried in the boy's body. He listened to Penny's threat, then watched as she walked away. He, however, didn't move, his arrow still trained on the leader. "She's nicer than me. I would've shot to kill. And I will, if you ever find the nerve to attack her again. You won't survive the next time. I can promise that much." Leaving it at that, he walked forward, retrieving the arrow from the ground next to the boy, smirking at him as he did so. He then went and retrieved the other one, then made after Penny toward the cabin.

message 283: by [deleted user] (new)

The boys ran off leaving the wounded to limp after them.
Penny kicked the bucket angrily pacing back and forth

message 284: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max followed Penny, whistling softly. He thought that went quite well, considering the fact that she was totally untrained. She'd make a good Ranger after training. He walked until she came into view, then noticed her anger. He approached her, then said when he got close enough, "Why are you upset? I thought that went quite well."

message 285: by [deleted user] (new)

She wheeled around ready to make an angry comeback but stopped "Its just... I dont think im cut out for this. No matter what i do or how much i work ill never be respected like you. Everyone loves you and then they see me and want to beat me up. I cant help that im a girl! Doesn't mean i dont want to be a ranger because i definitely do i just want people to look past me being the wrong gender." She finished her rant breathless. Her body hurt from the beating which added heat to her frustration "I wanted to kill him Max. I wanted to put an arrow through his stupid head." She sighed running a hand through her hair

message 286: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max listened to her rant, then nodded at the end of it. "You can't help your gender. So don't worry about it. You have the drive, you have the strength. It's only your third day as an apprentice ranger. I promise, they're going to be watching you practice for the next few years, and they'll learn to respect you. And, I, personally, think you should've put an arrow through him. I would've turned a blind eye. But you did well. Better than I would've ever imagined. I'd hate to say it, as it tends to inflate one's ego, but I think that if you try hard enough, you're going to be a great Ranger."

message 287: by [deleted user] (new)

She looked at him "You really think so?" She got a new flare of hope. If he thought she could do it she probably could. She smiled slightly her split lip stinging. "I better go get that water then." She picked up the bucket she had kicked. "I hope you're right about it" She said before heading to get the water.

message 288: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max watched the light flood back into her eyes, and couldn't help but smile back when she smiled. He watched as she picked up the bucket and walked to the water. It was sort of funny, how much she trusted his word already. He shook his head slightly, turning away and walking up to the cabin to prepare breakfast.

message 289: by [deleted user] (new)

A little while later she came in "Barrels full." She sat the bucket down and took a seat. She sat back and stretched her muscles complaining. She hoped she'd see at least one of them. She wanted to knock some heads together.

message 290: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max looked up. "Ok. Thank you." He served out the breakfast that he'd made onto two plates, handing one to her and sitting down with the others. "Are you ready for your first day of training?" He asked after a pause.

message 291: by [deleted user] (new)

"More then ready. " She said wolfing down the food, excited to start training. She took a sip of water to wash it down then sat back "Ready when you" She smiled at his barely half eaten breakfast

message 292: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max watched as she scarfed down her breakfast, then looked down at the remains of his own. "Of course you are." He said with a small smile. He deliberately took his time eating the rest of his food, then sipped slowly at a glass of water to wash it down.

message 293: by [deleted user] (new)

She sat patiently knowing he was testing her. She kept in her comments and watched him her eyebrows raised slightly

message 294: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max nodded approvingly at her patience. Once it became evident that she was going to be patient until he was done, he drained the rest of his water and stood. "First thing's first. We need to exchange your bow for a standard Ranger's bow." He walked to the same cabinet that he'd gathered the cloak from, taking out the small unstrung recurve bow.

message 295: by [deleted user] (new)

She smiled wide and stood up. She walked over and examined it "What kind of wood is this?" She asked curiously runnung her finger along itb

message 296: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments ((*-* I don't know! It's going to be cedar, because that seems legit.))

message 297: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments "Cedar." Max answered. He motioned to the door. "C'mon. When we get outside, we'll see if you can string it yourself." With that, he walked outside, assuming that she would follow.

message 298: by [deleted user] (new)

((That's fine :D ))

She followed excitedly. She looked it over a small smile on her lips "Did you start out with one of these?"

message 299: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max nodded at her, or rather, he nodded with the assumption that she saw. "I did." He said. He led her to the field that had a few targets at different heights and locations. He pointed to the one nearest to them, only about 50 feet away and a little to their right. "Shoot that one." He said simply.

message 300: by [deleted user] (new)

She thought back to her lesson on how to string and unstring a bow. She never unstrung her other bow but she rmemebered how to. She put it around the first notch then holding it down with her foot and thigh she placed it onto the top notch, checking the string's tightness. She smiled at her work then drew one of her arrows. She drew a couple times getting used to it then drew for real. Her back and arm muscles ached but she held strong. She felt her pointer finger brush her mouth before releasing
