1980's monsters & creatures B&W pointillism style art book

I remember owning this book in the 80's. it was a large paperback (8x10?) about a half-inch thick. So a "coffee table" type of book?

Front cover was glossy mostly white and - I'm trying to remember here - red lettering for the title and author, can't remember if the artwork was black or smoke gray and subtle. The back was probably black with white lettering but again unsure.

Inside the artwork was pointillism style black-and-white on one side of the page and full descriptions of the creature depicted. Things like the vampire, mummy, ghost etc. Not a D&D book (I had those too). Not a children's book, more teen and up?

I think I read this book too, but can't remember the author or title. Was one of the entries a short one about the concept of chaos, by any chance? Most of the other entries I recall were about weird monsters with B&W illustrations.

could be, sounds right... I think I remember a picture of a stairway or maybe something living under the stairs (not Harry Potter).

I don't remember that part about the stairway but I seem to remember one of the creature entries was about a homunculus. Do you remember if your book had an entry about homunculi?
