Yesterday the president of Portugal declared state of emergency, finally!People went crazy for the toilet paper here too. I think food is more important, also I have a bidet haha
Masks are sold out. I've been working at home for a week now.
How is everyone holding up?
I've been working from home for over a week now. I'm starting to miss my office and my colleagues. There is also a part of my job I cannot do without live interaction, so I think by this time next week I will have lots of time to read - or I'm busy helping other people. We'll see. I have all my groceries delivered each week and I only leave the house twice a day for a short bike ride or a walk. The weather is great for that. My husband and I are elderly and not 100% healthy so we hope for the best.
Sometimes it feels as if living in a SF story...

Also in Norway people were hoarding toilet paper on the first couple of days after everything closed down, but soon realised that there's no need to do that. The grocery stores have all kinds of goods delivered every day, and there will be no shortage of anything as long as people only buy what they need. However, face masks and hand sterilizers are sold out, but the health authorities discourage us to wear masks, and ensure us that using soap and water is the best way to wash our hands. My husband and I are both freelancers working from home, so for us it's business as usual.

I have been telling people that is what this is and no one believes me!!!

Not a bad idea - esp since I am 60. :) Seriously, I think it is good to look out for our vulnerable citizens.
My husband and I are both working remotely now. We would not have been able to be as productive as we are if not for all the new technologies. Remember to comb your hair and check behind you before you get on all those video conference calls!
Stay well and Read!
Stay well and Read!
This comment is likely supposed to be in the Tech Thread. I am slow on the uptake when it comes to technology.I am trying to access eb books from my library - they are all closed of course.
I have a Kindle Fire and know Overdrive/Libby are compatible. But I just figured out both the Library's Enki and Cloud Ebooks are NOT compatible. So it took awhile!
Ugh, I do not like reading my books via my computer and my smart phone is too small
We are all working remotely - happy to be able to, but very worried about small business brick-and-mortar people who don't have that option. Also - I am reading a lot about issues down at popular summering spots at the Jersey shore and the Hamptons where wealthy people have 2nd homes or investment homes. Seems a lot of these people decided to "shelter in place" in their second homes putting a burden on the local residents whose grocery stores might carry a lot less stock in the off season - the stories about the Hamptons would be funny if they weren't so bizarre and selfish - multi millionaires who cleaned out grocery stores and not just of TP but of meat, cleaning products, produce.
In Norway it is now forbidden to stay in holiday homes. The main reason is that hospitals in the rural areas are small and far between, and not equipped for treating corona patients from out of town. There's also the burden on the local grocery stores as well as the extra health risk for the residents. Our government has been much critizised for this decision, but I think it makes sense.
I live in a small coastal town that is visited by many tourists. A week ago during Spring Break, we were suddenly deluged by tourists who ignored social distancing and denuded the already emptied grocery stores. Our mayor and the mayors of neighboring communities told all the tourists to get out of town--gave them 24 hours before closing all hotels. We usually love the visitors but this was too much. And now our town has its first documented case of the virus. I'm sure there will be more to come.

Not surprising. I also live in a tourist area - forested/mountains. Crowded trails. Result - one county (not mine) did a shutdown order. And the local state park got closed - it was also quite crowded last weekend. And this promises to be a nicer weekend.Plus a letter in the paper questioned whether trout season should open on 4/1. Many who come aren't necessarily from out-of-state, but a number show up from places withmany more confirmed cases than we have - so far we only have one.
California: Bay Area. They have locked the parking lots to almost if not all the beaches in the area.
The Essential Employees is an interesting concept. I rent a room. Of the 5 of us: 1 has gone home to his parents, THREE are still working. 1. methadone clinic, 1 dispatcher for those vans who transport bodies and 3. makes metal components that PGE need - therefore essential.
Luckily we all keep to ourselves anyhow... but I want to lysol the entire house

They had to do that in Vancouver as well. Last weekend people flocked to the beaches and I think they even had a wedding there. The Mayor / Town Council, removed all the logs from the beach that people use for seats, they closed the parking lots, that sort of thing..
Feeling better. Lysoled doors, knobs, frig, w/d, railings, cabinets, door handles, doors.. patio furniture. Mopped.

Very smart! We're not retired but only go out for groceries!! Okay, and the liquor store too.

I spent all of yesterday doing that, although not with Lysol. No bleach, lysol, or anything like that available here at all.

I can’t find any Lysol! Or butter. Was going to make a peanut butter pie. The entire section was bare.

I have plenty of butter, but I'd much rather have Lysol. I did manage to find this at amazon, which sort of set my mind at ease, so I bought two:

On my Next Door App, I posted a bunch of free books I had planned on trading in at my used book store. I jokingly asked for Lysol In Trade. We all had a giggle. Our city is doing free testing only for those who have symptoms esp a temp. 54/207 tested postitive.
Nancy, I really need that booze....

I ordered wine online from a local liquor store. I had to pick it up.

I have Next Door too, and aside from people bitching and arguing about the lack of toilet paper at the grocery store, there's not much going on there. I should try bartering books for Lysol ... what a concept!

My husband's birthday was yesterday. We played games, watched movies, I baked his cake and he took a nap. It was an oddly satisfying way to spend the day. What did you do?

Aww thanks Wendy and Nichelle and Bill and Nichelle that’s so cool that your husband has the same birthday as mine and Nichelle I video chatted with my family members
I just got this new app called Zoom and I was thinking that we should do our own goodreads by video chatting on Zoom
Christine, the birthday thing gets weirder. My birthday was March 9th. I tend to keep them low key. My co workers give me and our classroom kids cupcakes in celebration. Being pre-diabetic, I offered the leftover cupcakes to my 4 roommates. We discovered out of 5 people living in a house we ALL d birthdays in March and if you like horoscopes, 4 are ALL Pisces.
I got to do zoom for work. I am in dire need to talk to anyone. I would not how to set it up. As much as I love you all, I am a bit nervous with security
Oh I’m sorry Wendy and Wendy I won’t announce that it’s my birthday anymore and Wendy I hope you had a great birthday and oh that’s cool Wendy and Wendy that stinks that your a pre-diabetic and aww that’s so sweet Wendy and that’s a lot of birthdays Wendy and I like horoscopes Wendy and Wendy that’s cool that you got to do Zoom for your work and aww that’s so sweet Wendy and I understand Wendy

Monday the 16th my watering hole closed at midnight. Believe me, I am a light drinker - but the rest of her patrons are hurting!!
