I read this in 2014-2016 and it was relatively new but hadn't come out the year I read it I don't think. I think it was written by a man. It was the first book in the series and i think there were 4 books total, each focusing on a different element (water, fire, earth, air).

I remember the boy having a physical disability, his leg, he was bullied for it and was an orphan. He then arrives in the magical dimension and studies under a wizard (?). I remember there being a description of aa rope being pulled every time he crossed between the dimensions. The girl he meets isn't able to cross between worlds until later in the book. They also end up travelling to a water biome where all the creatures breathe and talk underwater, there's a museum that they go to in this water biome.
