The book dealt with a girl that was adopted by a very nice family that loved her. The reason she was put up for adoption was because her mother had some kind of mental break down and tried to kill all of her kids. She was the only one that survived, and the mother was taken into custody. The one thing that I remember the most is that the mother used to tell her kids that the black birds that sit on wires are people that have died and that they look after us now. After the incident there was worldwide interest in adopting the girl, somehow she ended up with this couple. When she was in high school, a social worker or someone in the right position brought her a letter to the girl from her mother. The adoptive parents were resistant on letting the girl read the letter but she insisted. Upon opening the letter she found many blank pages on the last one she found a single line, something along the lines of “We need to finish what we started”. Upon getting that letter she for some reason decided to go on a road trip with the new boy from school, which showed interest in her. She went to her old house. I can’t remember how the book ended but I think her mother trying to kill her again.

There was also a scene when everyone in a cafeteria sings and stomps the tables to the rhythm of "We will rock you".
