SOLVED. Young adult/middle grade book, sci-fi-esque. Possible second of series. Siblings (boy and girl) on a submarine hunting for giant squid.

- I read this when I was in middle school (2013-2016 time frame)
- it was the second of a series or there was a book after it but it was part of a series
- the girl had a whole trunk of moleskine notebooks because her dead mother scientist left them to her
- there was a talking ape
- the girl walked tightrope
- the giant squid ended up being something much worse
- subterfuge

This has been driving me nuts for days, so if anyone knows I’d be so grateful!!

Probably not it, but it reminds me of the Lemony Snicket series: A Series Of Unfortunate Events Lemony Snicket 13 Books Collection Pack Set It has all a lot of these elements (although I think it was a monkey who could write or sth) -but they come up in different books. Or at least the tightrope and submarine scenes were in different books.

That's the first thing I thought of. Probably The Grim Grotto (book 11 of A Series Of Unfortunate Events).

It’s definitely not a series of unfortunate events, there were only two siblings. There was an aunt investigating a deep sea creature for sure though
