What do you think happened in between the end of the war and the reunion in France? Why did they move to the U.S.?

It seems like Vianne's family moved to the US shortly after baby Julien was born. There's some comment that, as of 1995, she had lived in the US for more than half of her life. I think they moved to escape all the pain associated with the war, and her home must have been a constant reminder of Von Richter.
I agree. Also the areas torn apart by war took years to get back to some semblance of decency as far as dead trees, downed buildings etc. Many people emigrated to new countries to get away from all of it any any trace of memories. Some never spoke of it again.
