YA Fiction - Humanity has been updated and those that don't receive the upgrade are like ghosts. MC finds an old tape recorder and uses it to communicate with the ghosts.

I'm looking for a book where humanity had been upgraded in the past and those who didn't recieve the upgrade are ghosts. I'm sure the book, or at least the series it was in, had a plot point about robot bees replacing natural bees - but I might be confusing that with another book.

Possible Spoilers: There is a scene later in the book where the MC's town sit together for a celebration and there is another upgrade where they are conne ted by tentacle-like onjects.

I don't remember how long ago I read it, and while I thought I remembered the title I can't seem to find anything about it online. I thought at least one of the books was called something like 1.0 or another similar number.
