Spoilers ahead...
The plot takes a huge left turn: the competition or enmity between the hackers started to turn into a sense of common purpose as they discover strange happenings that affect them all. It turns out that (view spoiler)[ they are all living in a computer simulation, like in The Matrix. But unlike in the Matrix, they discover that all life on Earth is dead, and there is nothing left on the surface of the planet except solar panels powering this underground computer simulation. The novel ends on a note of hope when the hackers figure out how to send a robot to the surface, and the video feed shows that there is primitive life (maybe mold or moss). (hide spoiler)]
I'd be happy for any help!
Thanks,
