Trying to find middle grade novel published in the 70s/early 80s about a girl who finds a merman in a stream. She may have just moved to the countryside. I remember the lyrics to Flow Gently, Sweet Afton being in the book, perhaps something about the Avon River? May have been a book fair choice. The merman may have been injured or lost, possibly had a horn to call for help. I remember him as being quite grumpy! I think there were chapter heading line illustrations.

"How can you make me a mermaid?" Lucy asked. She was not sure she liked the idea.

It always kind of disappoints me that she didn't have any other published books. I just searched Google Books and came across this interesting dedication in Trapped in Time by Ruth Chew. "For my sister Audrey Brixner, ..." Wow.
