Cheryl (cherylllr) What hermitage, community, town, or city from fiction would you like to live in, at least for awhile? Any genre, but of course I'm especially intrigued by anything SF or TT.

I'm guessing not many will say Ankh-Morpork of Discworld, but I could be wrong? I'm thinking maybe The Shire, of Middle-Earth, but I've never successfully read the whole series so maybe there's a 'dark underbelly' that I should avoid? Hm. Maybe Gora, from The Galaxy, and the Ground Within.

Dean I'll spend a year or two in Bedford Falls! Okay, that's from the film It's a Wonderful Life rather than a book, but I can justify my choice as the very same Bedford Falls did play an integral part of the Red Dwarf SF books that I just re-read.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Hah! Excellent!

Pat of Rocks | 70 comments I grew up in Jimmy Stewart's hometown, which likes to advertise itself as also being Bedford Falls! Guess I've checked off that one.

For me, it'd be Green Town, the idyllic small town setting of Bradbury's Dandelion Wine. It's quiet, quaint, and everyone knows each other....and every now and then, it's the setting of something spooky (i e. Something Wicked This Way Comes).

Even though I didn't really like the book, the rural summer setting in The Secret Life of Bees sounds like a great place for a relaxing vacation. No obligations, not many people around, no TV. I could read so many books.

One of my favorite novels of all time is Gone With the Wind, and sometimes I like to re-read the party at Twelve Oaks scene just because I want to live in that party for a minute. (Minus the slavery obviously)

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments I would go into the YA world of TJ Klune's The House on the Cerulean Sea or the town nearby. I read too many dystopian novels and cozy murder mysteries and would probably end up on the wrong side of the law or knife if I lived in any of those worlds.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh, wow, you've all got me dreaming. Gosh.

And nice to see someone remembers Green Town.

Glynn | 342 comments I think it would be cool to live in Emerald City for a while. :)

Me too! I read the story 50 years ago in junior high and it has stayed in the back of my mind ever since. Reminds me of Twilight Zone’s Last Train to Willoughby, said to be Rod Serling’s favorite from the first season.
I’d also like to visit Ross McDonald’s Los Angeles from the late 40s, earthly 50s.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Hmm... I, personally, am not too sure about either of those choices. Too much drama I think, for me. :)

Glynn | 342 comments Ooh. I thought of another place I might like to hang out in, if only for a little while: St Mary Mead. Lots of drama there as well. :)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ah, yes, sometimes it amazes me how much drama can happen in one small town. (I had to look it up, though, I admit.)
