(view spoiler)[Okay, like this is book as an obvious cookie cutter YA special girl book, but god damn I would be lying if I didn't say I enjoyed it. Mare's sassiness is something that I just like. It pages are turning, the writing flows well for me so far. I also would kill for Cal. Maven is starting to grow me though and I really want to know more about him. She also mentions that he probably doesn't have mind reading powers but what if does. Like what if he has both or something. Idk. I'm just really enjoying it so far. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter of - (view spoiler)[Mare is in and out and in and out of captivity and I’m caring less and less each time… I can’t put my finger on exactly what I find so draining about this book. There is action and plot but, I think, at the same time it also feels bogged down with Mare’s internal monologue. She constantly focuses on her feelings for Maven and Cal and laments over her captivity. I understand that her position is a horrific one but I am just rooting for the girl to hatch an innovative plan or at least push herself out of the monotonous back-and-forth thoughts that neither further the plot or provide the reader with any further insight.

The new queen is going to be a force to be reckoned with and I can’t wait to see how she is going to impact Maven and his ruling of the country. I also can’t wait to see Evangeline come back out to play. (hide spoiler)]

I'm liking KC far less than the other books in the series. I'm only half-way through though so hopefully I'll enjoy it more as it progresses. The conclusion for both RG and GS were amazing and fingers crossed this one is as well.

I'm alternating between audio and physical for them all. I work from home and am listening to my audio whilst I do all the tasks that require little brain power.

Third quarter of - (view spoiler)[Cal and Mare are reunited and I am so glad, if only for an end to her relentless misery over missing him. Their reunion involved even more internal monologue musings but at least the action got going again, following this. Her reunion with her family was the absolute sweetest! (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter of - (view spoiler)[Once reunited, the rebellion trained for SO long. It was interesting, but I was also constantly just waiting for WAR! As with all of the books in this series, the book ended on a massive high, though, and delivered all of the brutal war scenes and high action that I was anticipating. Each book has concluded in a way that appeals to me in a way the rest of the book has failed to and has me frantically turning the pages. The action was interspersed with Evangeline’s perspective and it made for high tension and prolonged suspense. Cal’s betrayal was just the sort of shocking twist that made it all feel complete! I really hope this Colonel didnt do anything to Cal. I k ow he isnt exactly the good guy, but Cal has some good qualities, and I dont think he will betray them. First quarter of - (view spoiler)[ I was hoping that this final book would see Mare realise that instead of lamenting over boys she could embrace her badass bitch vibes and shun all of her prospective love interests entirely. I’m just waiting for the girl to understand that she can be just as strong solo, especially with her family at her back.

This is the kind of densely political that I hoped the previous books would be. I’m enjoying this initially more than both Glass Sword and King’s Cage. I’m also loving how she has joined forces with Evangeline. I’m holding out hope that the two truly unite in feeling as well as in cause and begin to understand each other! (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter of - (view spoiler)[ Mare's perspective is still by far my favourite. It is interesting seeing the political scheming of the previous books finally come to some sort of fruition. Evangeline's perspective also makes me understand her spiky exterior a lot more. She still has done some unforgivable things but her upbringing has schooled her to deem these the correct course of action. I don't know what it is about her but I really love her character. Iris, however, is plain dull. I find nothing of interest in her chapters. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter of - (view spoiler)[ This was not a bad conclusion to the series, but my feelings for this book remain the same as my feelings for the series as a whole. This felt far too dragged out for the story-line it actually contained and many elements, such as Maven's capture, felt too convenient. I am glad to see the series through to the end, however, as other elements, such as the politics of the world, were fascinating. I'm also glad that Mare didn't end up with Cal. I never felt either brother deserved her and so am glad with the outcome for all three involved in this annoying love triangle. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 4-11
(view spoiler)[Oof. I usually love some tropes and cliches but this book is hitting a lot of the ones I don't like.

My favourite character so far is probably Maven, he seems sweet and I feel really bad for him. Not only does he have to live in his brother's shadow, now he doesn't even get his freedom. I was kinda under the impression that all royal marriages in these types of stories are supposed to be political anyway regardless of if they're the heir, but I guess not? (hide spoiler)]

But alas even Farley was in on the plot and now the quest to find the New Bloods is on and hopefully they can save as many as possible. I'm still trying to understand why and how so many outsiders (people from other countries/enemy countries) are part of the Guard and can they be trusted. The Colonel obviously not but I guess we'll have to see how it plays out! (hide spoiler)]

I'm a bit confused as to why they're surprised that the attack made the Silvers even more angry at the Scarlet Guard, like duh? What else were you expecting? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Hah, okay so I correctly predicted that Shade was still alive. Towards the end there I had suspicions about Maven's intentions in joining the Guard (since the book kept drawing attention to the fact that Elara is his mother) but I never guessed he would be THAT bad.

Around the 2/3 point I was getting a bit annoyed at how Elara was so weirdly oblivious to everything that was going on considering she has fricking mindreading powers, not to mention all the messing around with the security cameras that her men watch over. I'm glad that this issue was resolved by the twist, I kinda just assumed it was a problem with the writing.

This book gets very mixed reviews but I'm really glad that I decided to pick it up, I think that the twist was nicely done and I actually like Maven even more now. (I have an unhealthy attachment to villainous characters) :D (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 18-21 (view spoiler)[ I'm sorry I thought Maven was evil and needed to be exterminated before but now.... He killed an infant and an entire family. Who does that??!?! Unfortunately I worry Mare will turn herself in. All these deaths are taking their toll even if she is still denying that fact. Then again I worry something worse is going to come along. (view spoiler)[ I’m really struggling with the loss of shade. Even Gareth who correct me if I’m wrong was able to manipulate gravity. Both had powers that were 100% valuable to the cause but shade too was just special. One of mares best friends not only her brother. Sure they got the evil queen, thank god, but I don’t know if it was worth it. Not even as bothered by Mare being a captive now.Hoping for better things, maybe some wins for the good guys in th next one. (hide spoiler)]
