Coraline by Neil Gaiman - Restarting October 25th 2021

I've started it - on the first chapter yet and have to get to uni but I wanted to say I'm already liking it so far. It's so whimsical and fun and the elderly are so funny, in a creepy way. The best part is how Coraline is so much like me! She loves to explore and likes animal shows 😊 now it's started to get spooky and I'm excited to continue

I've only just started ch.5 but do you think (view spoiler)[ Coraline's parents' disappearance has anything to do with her other parents? Also, it's quite creepy now how everyone calls Coraline by her right name..and that old man upstairs with his mice was definitely unsettling (hide spoiler)]

I haven't actually - in fact I only found out about it through my siblings after I'd bought the book 😅 I heard it's good though. Picked out the best parts of the book. Have you seen it?

Chapter 7 through 13

ok this picked up quite a bi, in a good way. It was slow and subtly creepy, now it's got scarier. Coraline is so brave. (view spoiler)[What's become of Miss Spink and Miss Forcible was quite horrible. And the thing in the cellar was absolutely terrifying- esp. when it was twisting and writhing in its struggle against the other mother's will. And then it finally gave up.

It was such a sorry creature. I loved Coraline even more in that moment, when she told it to be brave. Especially when its eye fell out I felt so sorry for it. 'You're just a thing she made and then threw away.'

Ok we found out more about the world building, how the other mother, how she copied it all off the real world and twisted it, but only to the house's limit. It was all mist at the edge of the world.

I liked how Coraline decided the challenge should be a treasure hunt, since she considers herself an explorer. I loved especially how she still stayed brave after the hand escaped and after she thought everything should've been over. It takes special courage to go back and conjure up courage again to face something you thought you'd already defeated. (hide spoiler)]

I kind of loved this. Children, and some adults, really need to this

First quarter - (view spoiler)[I was excited to reread this book as it's been five years since I first read the book. I have read the graphic novel since then but it didn't compare to the brilliance of this book. I'll never get over how genuinely creepy middle grade books can be! I'm listening to the audio narration this time and the mice's songs are chilling to listen to. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[The greatest horror in this whole book is the policeman who suggests hot chocolate when Coraline confesses that her parents are missing. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[Coraline is attempting to trade her safety, and the freedom of the other trapped kids, with her other mother. I hated the scene where the mother was tapping on her button eye as Caroline searched in their game. I can't imagine reading this as a child, as the other parents really creep me out! (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[I loved rereading this and seeing Caroline return to safety with her real parents. It was the perfect, spooky and odd, MG for October. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Yes, it was very selfless of her. I remember watching the movie when I was younger being terrified. And yes, those button eyes were a large part of that. I think that is why this story (book and movie) has such a following. It's still creepy as an adult. (hide spoiler)]

Being a children's book, I think we kind of know there will be some sort of happy ending, and there was, so that takes away the threat. Still, there are elements that make me, an adult, get shivers. No-one ever forgets the button eyes! I'd love to see a remake of the film but with an actual cast of actors. It'd be even creepier!
