I don't think it was a kid's book, I remember referring to it as an adult book (though I was somewhere in my early teens, maybe even pre-teen).
The story is a cat's life told through his eyes. His owner is an elderly lady. The setting is definitely suburbs, I think american.
What I remember most is that the owner lady used to lovingly call the cat "pandemonium". Towards the end of the book she has a stroke and loses the ability to speak, but in the last pages, she manages to say "pandemonium".
Rings a bell to anyone?
