Solo by Kwame Alexander - 4* - My Review

Solo is a young adult novel in verse about the teenage son of an aging rock star. Protagonist Blade has had a rocky relationship with his father. Blade’s girlfriend’s parents have forbidden her from seeing him, fearing he will end up like his father, who has had multiple stints in rehab. His mother died when he was a child. The first half covers his privileged life in Hollywood. The second half finds Blade in Ghana in search of his heritage. He discovers what life is like in rural Ghana. At the core of the story is the healing power of music. Several songs are interwoven into the narrative. He learns something about the world and himself. It is a hopeful and moving story.
