Linguistics book about language contact and pidgin

I read this book about eight years ago. It was an easily readable essay, not a ponderous study meant for linguists and researchers only. It covered the subject of language contact and the languages, pidgins and creoles born from it. I remember it dealt with languages such as Russenorsk, Michif, Media Lengua and Mednyi Aleut. I am pretty sure it also mentioned a sign language spontaneously created by the children of an orphanage in Nicaragua.

The Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language? The Creole Debate? The Missing Spanish Creoles: Recovering the Birth of Plantation Contact Languages? Something else by McWhorter, who has written a ton on this subject?

If not, have you searched Goodreads for "pidgin creole"? There's a lot on this topic, a favorite of mine. Good luck!

I would say about 300 pages. I cannot be more precise since it was an ebook. No memories whatsoever about the cover. I have a hunch that the author was a man (or maybe two men...) but it's just a hunch.
