Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments That's one of the Anastasia or Sam books by Lois Lowry. Anastasia Again! is the one where the Krupnik family moves out to the suburbs and where Sam meets their neighbor "Gertrustein" for the first time. All About Sam is the first book in the spinoff series about Sam.

Daisy's suggestion of All About Sam by Lois Lowry sounds like your book.

Kirkus Review:
"... precocious youngest member and reporting on his first four years, from his point of view. Anastasia's brother Sam is already a unique individual when he is disgusted at having to wear a hat home from the hospital after he is born. His gleeful infant efforts to control grown-ups are followed by his toddler attempts to understand a puzzling world: what are those "terrible twos" his parents say he's in the midst of, and will they hurt him? Finally, he makes a reluctant (but triumphant) entry into nursery school and—with the aid of elderly friend Gertrustein—celebrates the sheer joy of existence."

Quotes from the book:
- ... Mom made curtains with unicorns on them just for you. I bet you're the only baby in Cambridge who gets to sleep in a pantry!"
Pan tree, thought Sam. Rock-a-bye, baby ...
- They were talking to each other, but he didn't understand what they were saying, and he was a little bored. He was sleepy, too. Then he heard the man say, "Have you picked out his name?"
