All I can rember was what was in the description.

Was it possibly "Brian's Victory" by Ethel Calvert Phillips. It was published in 1942, took place during WWII. Brian left England to live in the US during the war and was given a white kitten that he named Victory.

If you think it's a book with baseball elements, it might be on this page.I think we can rule out John R. Tunis's books. They mostly don't take place in the country, though a few of them start there or have scenes there. (Like The Kid from Tomkinsville, Young Razzle, and Schoolboy Johnson.)

Sounds like the book you are looking for is Bully Boys. There is the war of 1812 going on, and he is a country boy who eventually has to join the army because of security reasons.
