Read It, Watch It Challenge

A 2023 Bonus Challenge

The “Read It, Watch It” challenge is back! This was a 52 Book Club fan created addition to some of our past challenges, and we’re excited to have it return for 2023!

Our “Read It, Watch It” is an optional, bonus challenge that ties into the prompts you’re already reading for the 2023 challenge! Over the course of the year, we’ll be reading, watching, and discussing books and movies that fit under four of our 2023 prompts. This is a fun way to dive deeper into a story and see the films or shows that were inspired by it!

How it works:

1) Our “Read It, Watch It” challenge has four prompts to be completed (read and watched) during a specific time of the year. This year’s prompts are:

January – March: A book under 200 pages
April – June: Featuring one of the seven deadly sins
July – September: A banned book
October – December: A book about secrets

2) For each of the four prompts, pick a book that not only matches the prompt but ALSO has a movie and/or TV adaptation. As always, feel free to get creative with your book choice.

3) During the corresponding months, read it, watch it, and discuss! Join the Facebook group and watch for specific discussion threads related to our Read It, Watch It challenge! These discussions will be hosted by one of our longtime 52 Book Club members, and inspiration for the original 52 Book Club Read It, Watch It challenge — Melissa Hoyt!

Questions and tips:

What if I already read and finished one of these prompts?
Not to worry, there are several options! If the book you picked happens to have a movie or show adaptation, you’re ahead of the game! Watch it during the set months and join in the discussion.

If it doesn’t have an adaptation, you can either skip that part of this Read It, Watch It challenge OR choose to complete the prompt again with another book. (That doesn’t mean your first pick was a waste — it will likely fit another prompt on the 2023 challenge. Feel free to move them around!)

Does the movie have to be a direct adaptation of the book?
No. As always, feel free to get creative with this bonus challenge. For example, you might choose to read the book “Pride and Prejudice” for the prompt “Featuring one of the seven deadly sins.” When it comes to picking the film version, you might go with a traditional retelling of the story or a spin-off like Bridget Jones’ Diary. It’s up to you!

Kezia | 42 comments Well then, I guess I'm already done the first challenge. I read and watched Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I have also finished reading To Sir, With Love by E.R. Braithwaite. Technically, I plan to use it for the "By a Caribbean author" category, but the book was also under 200 pages, and I am planning to watch the movie with Sidney Poitier just as soon as I find the streaming service that has it, and I find the time to sit and watch it.

I'm sort of planning to read "The Virgin Suicides" by Jeffrey Eugenides. That should cover "lust". There's also any number of Agatha Christie novels that could cover any one of the seven sins, and since I have Britbox I can watch all of the adaptations of Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot.

Ketutar Jensen | 14 comments For January-March, a book under 200 pages
I watched the movie in February, and read the book in March :-D

Conjure Wife by Fritz Leiber 188 pages
The movie: The Night of the Eagle (or Burn, Witch, Burn, as it's also called.)

The movie followed the book acceptably close, but missed some important points here and there. I think it managed to solve some difficult problems in an interesting way, but also managed to confuse things a little too much :-D

Beth | 139 comments For 7 deadly sins I read Behind Her Eyes and watched the Netflix limited series. Sin represented: lust

message 16: by Beth (new)

Beth | 139 comments Oh, I just remembered that back in March I read and watched A Monster Calls. Still makes me cry.

Movie link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3416532/. It's available on Netflix.

Kate (katelynne) | 1 comments Under 200 Pages: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
7 Deadly Sins: East of Eden by John Steinbeck (envy, wrath, take your pick)

I went from one of Steinbeck's shortest to one of his longest. This was a complete accident.

Ellis Peters - The Sanctuary Sparrow

2) 7 deadly sins
Ellis Peters - The Pilgrim of Hate

3) Banned book: Harper Lee - To Kill a Mockingbird. I always want an excuse to watch Gregory Peck.

4) Book about a secret - It'll be Anatomy of a Murder by Robert Traver. Jimmy Stewart is another I always enjoy having an excuse to watch.

message 23: by Aquaria (new)

Aquaria | 286 comments For those needing a book for the last prompt about secrets:

Ellis Peters: The Leper of St. Giles. 278 pages. It's the fifth entry in the Brother Cadfael series, but you don't need to have read the previous books at all to keep up.

The filmed adaptation is in Season 1, Episode 3 of the Cadfael BBC/Mystery! series. It runs around an hour and 15 minutes. Can be found on multiple streaming sites, including Youtube.

I read this back in January, but it's what I would have used if I'd known about this challenge.
