SOLVED. Postapocalyptic children's book involving survivors who read corrupted manuscripts left to them by pre-apocalyptic scientist [s]

My teacher read us this book in 1991 or 1992. I thought its name was something like "The Children of Time," but that's not turning up any books old enough to have been the one I'm thinking of. I *think* the main character's name was David and that he was going to be sent to the moon to escape some sort of anticipated apocalyptic event. He later woke up, maybe on Earth, after many many years. The people he found himself with had been living their lives based on his father's manuscripts, but those had been degraded over time. They referred to the son of the author as "Dabin" (I'm not sure how it was spelled, since the teacher read it aloud to us) son of "Jobin" (again with the spelling).
