Oops! Sorry. Just trying to say that this is not stilted verse written by dead guys. It's relevant.

Ioana | 2127 comments LOL, no worries 🤗
I know exactly what you meant. When I was in high school in communist Romania, dead poets' poetry was much, much better than the contemporary (alive) ones. What was allowed and published did not deserve to be called poetry. Ugh!

LOL. Yep! I kept thinking through the whole book, no one should mess with these women even if they weren't trained assassins. After a "certain age", women just don't put up with a lot of crap.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments #26 Running Blind (Jack Reacher, #4) by Lee Child Running Blind Reacher unwillingly helps the FBI catch a serial killer. I knew who the killer was almost immediately, but I read the rest of the book to find out how. I enjoyed every word. Reacher is such a great character. I had a few problems with this book, but they weren't enough to spoil the story for me. 4 fan girl stars. Paperback. Thriller.

#27 The Grace of Kings (The Dandelion Dynasty, #1) by Ken Liu The Grace of Kings This was good epic fantasy with solid writing. Unfortunately, it also had a LOT of detail on military strategy, martial arts and weaponry. It was like Bruce Lee trying to play Frodo in Lord of the Rings. Just not a good fit. 3 stars. Audiobook. Fantasy.

#28 Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Lessons in Chemistry Loved this book. It was humorous, heartbreaking and still drove home a serious message. It was historical fiction but I think the message still needs to be heard today. I strongly recommend this one. It won't be the book you think it is. I promise. 5 Go girl! stars. Audiobook. Historical Fiction.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments #29 The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb The Violin Conspiracy Excellent! A young man stakes his future on a priceless gift he receives from his grandmother, only to have it taken away. The mystery was good but the star of this book was the empathy you feel for this young man as the tension mounts throughout the book. So well written! 5 bravissimo stars. Audiobook. Mystery.

#30 Iron Lake (Cork O'Connor, #1) by William Kent Krueger Iron Lake A former small-town sheriff struggles with his demons while trying to solve a local murder and repair his marriage. This was well written and an interesting mystery/thriller but I wanted to like the characters better. I did enjoy it and I will probably read more in the series. 4 stars. Audiobook. Mystery/Thriller.

#31 Widowland by C.J. Carey Widowland What would have happened if Britain had signed a treaty with Nazi Germany rather than going to war? A young woman carefully navigates that new society where women are sorted into castes and widows are exiled to widowland. The reimagined history in this book was really well done and the story was interesting. It was well worth the read. It was just too derivative (see The Man in the High Castle, The Handmaiden's Tale, 1984) for me to give it more than 3 stars. Paperback. Fantasy/Alternative History.

#32 Properties of Thirst by Marianne Wiggins Properties of Thirst Past, present and future swirl together in this sweeping saga of a California family on the cusp of WWII. This book was beautifully written but sadly open ended. 3 left me thirsty for closure stars. Audiobook. Historical Fiction.

For me, This Tender Land was the best, with Ordinary Grace a close second. Iron Lake was ok, but nowhere close to the stand-alones.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments #33 Celia Garth by Gwen Bristow Celia Garth This is a book I checked out multiple times from the school library as a young teen. I wanted to see if I would still enjoy it. The answer was yes with a few reservations. The story centers around a female Johnny Tremaine-like character who acts as a spy in revolutionary Charleston. There is also a romance of course though not like the contemporary romances I read today. I'm pretty sure Mrs. Phillips, our librarian, wouldn't have put those on the shelf. The novel was actually written in 1959 and it shows. ( For clairity I was not a schoolgirl in 1959. These must have been considered clean reads for teens of the 1980's or someone donated them.) It was definitely written before feminism and political correctness were a thing. I never noticed it then but I'm pretty sure now I would deck any guy who called me "honeychild". There were also a few anachronisms particularly with the language. I really don't think the colonialists used the word wow?? In spite of that it was a good coming of age story and I was surprised at how much revolutionary history was included with a fair amount of accuracy. 3 blast from the past stars. ebook. Historical Fiction.

#34 Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson Shrines of Gaiety More historical fiction. I'm on a roll. I enjoyed this one as well but it was a lot more complicated. The story centers around the Coker family who operate a series of nightclubs in 1920's London. The book really gave you a good feel for the times but I did not really care for the characters. I didn't feel some of their motivations rang true. It all felt sort of pointless at the end. It's possible that was the point. 3 stars. Audiobook. Historical Fiction.

#35 The Golden Spoon by Jessa Maxwell The Golden Spoon I loved this one. I'm a big fan of The British Baking Show. This cozy mystery basically sets a murder mystery right in the middle of a competitive baking competition that suspiciously resembles The British Baking Show but is set in America and runs on the fictional Flicker rather than Netflix. I loved it. If you are a fan of the show you can probably make a good guess at the murder victim. Fun one. 4 perfectly baked stars. Audiobook. Cozy Mystery.

The problem enemy officer POW's were sent to the castle which proved to be difficult but not impossible to escape. The ingenuity and determination of these prisoners was remarkable. 4 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-History.

#37 Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt Remarkably Bright Creatures Tova lives a solitary, heartbroken life and confides only to Marcelus, the octopus on exhibit in the aquarium where she works. Marcelus is determined to help Tova's story have a happy ending. A surprisingly upbeat but unusual book, partially narrated by the octopus. Nice one. 4 stars. Audiobook. Contemporary Fiction.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments #39 Defending Jacob by William Landay Defending Jacob This was a re-read for my RL bookclub. I love the twists and turns this story takes. I also found the central question of the book "Can a person carry the propensity to murder in their DNA?" to be an interesting approach to this tale. I listened to the audiobook this time around and while I didn't enjoy it quite as much as my first read, I think my former rating still holds. 5 stars. Audiobook. Legal Mystery.

#40 The White Lady by Jacqueline Winspear The White Lady This book was a complete surprise. I thought it would be a quick little mystery thriller while I waited for something better from my hold list. I ended up loving it! The first Jacqueline Winspear that I have read. I think I'm going to have to fix that soon! An act of violence in a small village reveals that their new neighbor Ms. White is not the quiet old lady they all thought. 5 stars. Audiobook. Mystery/Thriller.

#41 A Is for Alibi (Kinsey Millhone, #1) by Sue Grafton A Is for Alibi This was another surprise but not the good kind. Based on all the Goodreads hype I thought I would love this series. Not so much. I will say that I listened to the audio production and it was terrible. I just felt that the whole thing was very one dimensional and the prose was choppy. I did like the overall concept and I may at some point read B just to give the series a fair chance so I'm bumping my rating up a little. 3 stars. Audiobook(a really bad one) Mystery.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments #42 The Thursday Murder Club (Thursday Murder Club, #1) by Richard Osman The Thursday Murder Club Four seniors in a senior village form a murder club to solve cold cases until an outbreak of murders drops a new case right into their laps. I absolutely loved this book! The characters were wonderful and I don't think I have ever read a mystery with as many twists as this one had. Funny yet very sweet. 4 the elderly always get their man stars. Audiobook. Mystery.

#43 A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles A Gentleman in Moscow Another amazing book! An aristocrat lives under house arrest at Moscow's Metropol hotel for decades but somehow lives a full life. So well written and like the previous book chock full of wonderful characters. His excellency the count being the prime example. A quiet book out of necessity but one that immerses the reader entirely in its setting. 4 stars. Paperback. Historical Fiction.

#44 And There Was Light Abraham Lincoln and the American Struggle by Jon Meacham And There Was Light: Abraham Lincoln and the American Struggle I'm adding this one to my President's challenge even though I had already read one on Lincoln. I'm glad I didn't miss this one though. Reading about such a divisive time in our nation's history and how one man's deep commitment to taking the high moral ground changed our world; inspires me with hope. Would that in our current turmoil we could find another Lincoln to lead the way. 4 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Biography/President's Challenge.

A Gentleman in Moscow was just one of those books that you either love it or hate it but it stays with you forever. So good! Glad I'm not the only one who loved it. I'm curious about the author's other books but like you everyone on Goodreads says his books are completely different. I'm not sure if that is a good thing right now so I may give it some time.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments #45 Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher Nettle & Bone A fairy tale for the modern ages with a princess who solves her own problem and a hero that has her back. Along the way there are dust witches, fairy godmothers, and bone dogs. I really like the way T. Kingfisher spins a fantasy yarn. 3 stars. Audiobook. Fantasy.

#46 Feed (Newsflesh, #1) by Mira Grant Feed I felt like this one was YA but it was still a great Zombie story. The political intrigue here was more gruesome than the Zombies but as it was written around 2010 strangely prescient. The dipiction of a pandemic was spot on. Great audio production. 3 can't say no to a good zombie tale stars. Audiobook. Fantasy/Zombie Apocalypse.

#47 Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich Future Home of the Living God An unspecified apocalypse triggers societal breakdown and leaves a young woman desparate to protect her unborn baby from the new regime. The story is less important here than the writing. Louise Erdrich has such a gift. This was a beautiful story. Reminiscent of The Handmaid’s Tale but still a unique story unto itself. 4 if I could write I would like to write like Louise stars. Audiobook. Fiction/Fantasy?/Apocalypse?

#48 The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean The Orchid Thief Every now and then a book comes along that everyone raves about. It's made into movies. People reference it. People recommend it. Finally, with trepidation I break down and read it. And then, I say, "I don't get it". This is that book. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't anything really. I don't get it. 3 at least it was short stars. Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments #56 The Galaxy, and the Ground Within (Wayfarers, #4) by Becky Chambers The Galaxy, and the Ground Within Becky Chambers cleverly writes satisfying SciFi that somehow parallels real world issues that our society must address. Never more true than in this final installment of the Wayfarers series. I was sorry to see the end of the book and the series. 4 intergalactic truck stop stars. Audiobook. SciFi.

#57 Clean(ish) Eat (Mostly) Clean, Live (Mainly) Clean, and Unlock Your Body's Natural Ability to Self-Clean by Gin Stephens Clean(ish): Eat (Mostly) Clean, Live (Mainly) Clean, and Unlock Your Body's Natural Ability to Self-Clean Somewhat disappointing. I really enjoyed Gin Stephens other books. In her other books she collates research on an issue (intermittent fasting) and presents it in layman terminology with a practical plan of action. Taking all the hype and static out of intermittent fasting and making it something acheivable. That was not the case with this book. She is promoting a clean lifestyle and it is anything but achievable if you do not live in an urban area and make tons of money. Also, I have read some in this area and I think some of her facts were disputable. I particularly disagree on her recommendation to always buy organic. It has been proven that the organic label can mean anything or nothing. Unless you live in a populous area you are unlikely to find organic with the guarantees or the brands that she promotes. Sorry, that's a rant which boils down to Gin needs to work on this one some more. 3ish stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Health.

#58 The Final Case A novel by David Guterson The Final Case: A novel A man helps his elderly father fulfill the duties of his final case as a defense attorney. The quiet atmosphere and the superb writing combine to make this a lovely book. Beware the action is limited but the emotion is powerful. 5 stars. ebook. Contemporary Fiction.

#59 A Fever in the Heartland The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them by Timothy Egan A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them Horrible but also enlightening. There was so much here that I did not know. They say that those who do not know history are destined to repeat it. A lot of this is being repeated right now in our country. While I did not enjoy this book, I'm glad that it is out there to remind us of what we do not want to become. 3 it could have been better organized stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-History.

#60 Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling Camp Zero The characters all struggle to survive the climate apocalypse on their own terms. This has shades of a feminist manifesto but seemed to be afraid to embrace it fully. A tribe of CliFi amazons would have been more interesting. This didn't quite make it. I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. 3 stars. Audibook. SciFi/CliFi/Apocalypse.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments It is a great concept but so far the story seems scattered. I'm hoping it comes together.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments #61 The Story of Arthur Truluv (Mason, #1) by Elizabeth Berg The Story of Arthur Truluv Wonderful story of a troubled young girl who is befriended by a widower and a retired school teacher just when they all most need a friend. This book was well written and has all the feels. I will continue the series. 4 lunch at the graveyard stars. ebook. Contemporary Fiction.

#62 Built to Move The Ten Essential Habits to Help You Move Freely and Live Fully by Kelly Starrett Built to Move: The Ten Essential Habits to Help You Move Freely and Live Fully An interesting and encouraging book but the author really concentrates on the big picture. Exercise, eat better, get plenty of sleep. Not a lot of information on the details. Specifically, more information on actual mobility exercises would have helped. 3 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Health.

#63 Station Eternity (The Midsolar Murders, #1) by Mur Lafferty Station Eternity I read Mur Lafferty's previous book Six Wakes. I enjoyed that one but I enjoyed this one much more. The characters, the mystery and the world building were all much more interesting in this one. I look forward to the next book in the series. My one criticism after reading both books is that the author has an unfortunate tendency for long detailed backstory. When there are multiple POV's this can be offputting. 4 alien symbiosis stars. Audiobook. SciFi/Mystery.

You do! It might have been my favorite of the series but I think I said that about every one of them.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1711 comments Time to catch up this list.

#64 Outlive The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity A lot of good information and good ideas here. Not much of an overall plan but some good things to work into your routine. 3 stay healthy as long as you can stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Health.

#65 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff 84, Charing Cross Road The only word that I can use to describe this book is charming. A collection of letters between and American writer and an English bookseller. It was funny and moving and well....completely charming. 4 sweet book lover stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Epistolary.

#66 A Hard Day for a Hangover (Sunshine Vicram, #3) by Darynda Jones A Hard Day for a Hangover This is a fun series about a female sheriff in a quirky little town. Chock full of characters this series is completely predictable and bound to make you smile. 3 I saw that coming stars. Audiobook. Contemporary Fiction/Mystery.

#67 Murder Your Employer The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide This book had it's moments and the characters did grow on me but I really felt it lacked something. It just felt a little too silly maybe? 3 stars. Audiobook. Mystery.

#68 All the President's Men by Carl Bernstein All the President's Men A new forward by the author published in this most recent edition of this classic compares the Watergate era with current events in the U.S. That was very interesting and well done. The rest was interesting but not nearly as exciting as I remember the movie being. That thought made me realize I had actually read this before years ago. I didn't think it was as exciting as the movie then either. I'm not sorry I listened to it again. Watergate clearly marks a change in both government and the press that we are still seeing play out today. 3 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Historical.

#69 City of Ink (Li Du, #3) by Elsa Hart City of Ink The final installment in an excellent mystery series set in ancient China. Beautiful descriptive writing is the hallmark of this series. Well done. 4 top notch writing stars. ebook. Mystery/Historical Fiction.
