Aria grimaced at the sound because she couldn't stand the sound of people chewing and such. Then she looked over at the tv to see if she could read the subtitle that he was talking about. "I can't see it either," she said while squinting at the screen.

Theodore stood, bringing his plate with him to a closer booth. With any luck, their waitress hadn't seen him and they might be able to leave without paying."...following their confessions, they have been sentenced to death..." Their driver and the woman (no sign of Safety Net) were kneeling in the street in front of the parking garage, hands behind their backs. One of the men that had shot at them last night stood behind them with a pistol in his hand.
Aria followed Theodore with her plate and sat down in another group. As she sat down, she looked over at the screen and was startled to see the people that had helped them not getting shot were being held and sentenced to death. "Why would they kill them if they confessed the truth?" she asked worriedly.
"Because they're enemies of the state. The Tsung are pretty facist and the Xiang-the people who said they were helping us-aren't. They're like... a guerilla movement. The good guys. The Tsung don't like that very much."
"Thats annoying since everyone now believes that they are the good guys," Aria said. She continued to eat her food glad to have something to eat since she was really hungry. Soon she was done and was sipping her drink.
Some words were exchanged that weren't translated quickly enough for the subtitles. Quite suddenly, the woman was on her feet, and lunging for the nearest enemy. She was shot twice, once in the stomach then in the chest, before their driver was shot in the head. Theodore sighed, more annoyed than sad. "So, there goes all our friends."
Aria sat, horrified, at what she had just seen on the TV screen. She couldn't believe that the Tsung would just kill them like that and the other people just let them. She, even though she didn't know them or care for them that much, was sad at their death which contrasted from Theodore's. "Is there a way to stop them from hurting any more people? You would know since you wrote about them," she said.
"Kill the Emperor." Theodore shrugged. "The Starbomb was a stolen prototype ship... or is I guess. Sorry, my verb tenses might take some time to adjust to the world being batshit insane. Anyway: The ultimate goal was to escape Tsung space, not stop the Emperor. But since it should be impossibly far away from either of us to ever board, I'd say our options are nonexistent."
Aria sighed, more like groaned, and put her head in her hands. She couldn't believe that there wasn't a way to stop them except with their ship. With this in mind, she asked him, "Where is the ship? If we get to it we might be able to stop the Emperor and the whole Tsung group."
"Not on Earth. Not by a longshot. Though, fortunately, the Tsung are the remnant of an empire that expanded very well far away from Earth. This planet had only recently become a point of contention between Tsung and Xiang forces, and even at that a more symbolic than important objective for either side. So we won't be running from a very big army."
Aria said more to herself, "Of course it had to be far away. They wouldn't want to make it convenient." Then she sighed and looked up at Theodore. "Why do they want to have a similarity, Earth," she said to clarify, "if they don't like each other? Wouldn't they want to be separate?"
"'Point of contention' means they're fighting over it. It's where people started, right? So owning it is like symbolic. Like. Being the safeguard of humanity. It's like the Twin Towers going down. It's not like the attacks hurt our military or our government. They were a symbol of America's mercantile empire, whether their existence accomplished anything or not."
"Oh, oops. I don't know that much about those types of things. So, they are fighting over Earth for power and to scare everyone. Thats nice," Aria said laughing humorlessly at what he had told her.
"But, like I said, it isn't super important to either side's strategy. The Xiang already has popular support and the Tsung can already scare people into doing whatever they want."
Aria nodded agreeing with both of his statements. Then, she asked him, "Are we just going to have to wait until this all clears up? It might be unsafe to do anything else."
"'Clears up'? The Tsung, for whatever reason, want both of us dead. There's no clearing that up. There's dying."
"Why would they want me dead? They don't know me," she said to him.
"By association with me, I guess. Maybe they hate all bad authors."
"you're probably right about the association thing but you're probably not a bad author," she said.
"Now isn't the time for flattery." Theodore finished eating. "We should probably get back on the road. We're probably only half a day from Seattle, and from there we can go to my family's orchard."
"Okay," Aria said standing up. She had already finished up her meal and she took it to the trash to throw out. They had already paid for their meal so they walked out of the McDonalds.
(IHOP...)Theodore followed. When they were safely outside, he walked a bit faster. "...have you noticed us getting weird looks?"
(sorry!)Aria looked around, forgetting that that would look suspicious. "No have we?" she asked him.
"I don't know. Maybe. Maybe I'm paranoid." He crossed his arms.
Aria looked around once more now feeling like she was being watched. They walked toward the car.
"Do you want to drive? Its jury west until we get out of state. Unless you had a better plan than going to my parents."
"You can drive and no, I don't really have any better plans I think," she said to him.
Theodore unlocked the car, then fell into the drivers seat. Before he started it, he did a a suspicious scan of the area around the vehicle. "Too quiet..." He mumbled as the engine turned over. "To Washington, then."
Aria sat down in the passenger seat and nodded when he said that they would go to Washington. She also looked out the window but she wasn't as suspicious as Theodore was.
(They agreed to go to his parents, right?)Theodore pulled the car onto the road. "You can call me Theo, by the way." (Pronounced tey-oh, not thee-oh) he told her. "I don't know if we're friends, necessarily, but. Y'know. We're something."
(yeah)Aria said smiling putting emphasis on his name, "Okay, Theo. I glad we're something." She laughed quietly as they started to drive.
"Yeah..." Theodore tried to think of a good joke and couldn't. "...so...uh... this giraffe... this leprechaun... and this french guy all walk into a bar, right? And the leprechaun looks up and says 'oi milassies, I'm in the wrong joke again!' and runs out." His Irish accent wasn't very good.
Aria laughs at both the joke and his accent. "You really have to work on your accents, Theo," she said. "Maybe your jokes as well," she added with a smile so he knew that she was joking.
Traffic was light for the early-morning weekend. "We don't know what those guys said. The woman, and the driver, that is. Someone might be watching for this car."
Aria turned to him and asked, "Should we rent another car?" She didn't want to get recognized and taken by them.
"I don't think I have the credit rating to rent a car. And I don't have any cash on me. And the car wouldn't get returned. So... no, unless you can."
"My credit rating is okay so we can go rent a car," Aria said. She didn't have any cash left so she would have to use her credit card.
"What if someone is watching our card usage?" Theodore hit the horn angrily when they were cut off. "And I don't know where a rental would be. And wouldn't they be mad if we never returned it?"
"You're right," Aria said when they started to drive again. "Do your parents have a car that we could borrow?" she asked him hesitantly.
"Well, I don't really have a plan after we get there."
"Neither do I," Aria said looking out of the window.
"Do you have family somewhere? Maybe somewhere closer?"
Aria thought about it for a moment before cautiously saying, "I think that my aunt might live around here. I saw her a few years ago but she would probably still her here."
"...do you have a number, or an address, or anything?" Theodore asked impatiently. "'Think' doesn't help us."
"Yeah, 6 Stoney Road," Aria told him reading off of the address on her phone.
"I borrowed a charger from someone in IHOP and charged it," she explained.
"...ah. It a... would have been great if you mentioned that... next time..." Theodore trailed off. "Uh, so, Stone Road? How do we get there?"
Aria told him the directions to get them to the road the quickest way and after a half hour they were there.
Theodore tried to find somewhere to park that kept the car hidden, like behind a topiary feature."So... aunt, right? Are you on good terms with her?"
