I think I read this sometime 2015-2018. It had a stark and medieval looking cover, I think. I was blown away that it wasn't an adult book.

The Book of Boy by Catherine Gilbert Murdock was published in 2018.

"In 1350, a boy with a large hump on his back becomes the servant of a shadowy pilgrim on his way to Rome, who pulls the boy into a dangerous expedition across Europe to gather the seven precious relics of Saint Peter.--Provided by Publisher."

The boy does not know that he is an angel, but the hump on his back are the wings. He doesn't eat (though he pretends to, and make vauge references to food through the book so that if you're not paying attention you don't realize that he never actually eats it).
