AN HONEST MAN by Michael Koryta...tension from the first sentence to the very last scene! Koryta is a meticulous author and a master at both plotting and character development. I wouldn't call this his best book but it delivers layers of emotion and tension as it explores both family antagonisms and one of today's most devastating problems (sexual trafficking). No spoilers! Read it! Don't start it unless you've got hours to devote! You will be drawn in and immerse yourself in this world. Then you'll be hooked and read his other works. Enjoy!

Impressive how Hallett could set multiple scenes, introduce the large cast, timeline, mostly through emails. I didn't mind that some of the delivery was implausible (true, it'd be faster to just call or text, no one in today's age emails that much), but it didn't take away from my enjoyment. What did however, was...

In the author's note, Cañas features a quote from Cheno Cortina, a paramilitary leader who defended the Mexican border against white settlers during the Texas Revolution. He used the word "vampires" to describe the invading force, and that is where Cañas got her next book idea. Obviously, the vampires in this book are supposed to be an allegory for the Yanquis. Key words: supposed to. The plot choice Cañas chose completely nips that in the bud to the point that the inclusion of the vampires, are first of all sparse, and second, irrelevant.

I am a great fan of Mick Herron's Slough House series but didn't realise that The Secret Hours was so wonderfully connected to it. Loved seeing some old favourites, back in the day in Berlin.

Darker in tone than Hendrix's typical books, it reveals the complacency and fear that can cripple a community, the dismissive and gaslighting behavior from authority or power figures towards gender and racial minorities, but also the bravery of mothers who protect their young. The most horrific scene of this novel isn't regarding the supernatural or unusual, but the...

The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger | audiobook read by CJ Wilson | My ReviewIn 1958, small town Jewel, Minnesota is rocked by the murder of its most prominent citizen and largest land owner. Richly written crime drama turns to a multi-jurisdiction action thriller.

I've enjoyed that series, too. Her books are always fun.
Terminal City by LInda Fairstein. It seems more about landmarks in New York City than the murder mystery in the story. Also it is hard to believe they would be so stupid as to put Cooper in such dangerous situations when someone is stalking her
Aussie/UK mystery writer Rachel Amphlett has a couple of stories on her website you might enjoy Devil of a Favor is a very short story with a worrying premise and a twist.
My review of Devil of a Favor
The second story by Rachel Amphlett is A Burning Question, a longer mystery featuring Detective Kay Hunter from her well-known series, although this is a standalone. Narrowboats have become a target for arson.
