This is the Pre-Read thread for the February 2023 Classics selection. This month we will be reading I, Robot by Isaac Asimov.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Why did you choose to read this particular sci-fi story? Any expectations?

Cheryl (cherylllr) I have enjoyed this, more than once, and I will try to join again. Not all of Asimov's work hold up well, and of course this isn't perfect, but imo it's still worth reading for pleasure and for history.

message 3: by Shellie (new)

Shellie | 2 comments I am joining. This book has been on my tbr shelf forever and is on the boxall's 1001 list

message 4: by Lina (new)

Lina | 182 comments I'll join too, I am looking forward to the book.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oops. I got confuse about dates. I reread it last week and already returned it. Well, I can probably still join in discussion.

Anisha Inkspill (anishainkspill) | 8 comments if I can - I'd love to join you - I'll see how the next few weeks go

message 8: by Mike (new)

Mike | 8 comments This has been on the TBR pile so looking forward to finally reading the stories that made the 3 laws of robotics famous.

message 9: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 3 comments This is on my TBR as well, so I’m really glad for the push to read it, and I’m looking forward to the discussion

Yasemin | 10 comments This will be my first time reading a book with this group. Looking forward to discussions.

message 11: by Paul (new)

Paul McMillan (ywtp) | 1 comments Also my first read with this group. Heard about it and the robotics laws but I didn’t know it was short stories which is a nice surprise.

I'll be reading this one too because I believe robotics and AI are creeping into our day-to-day activities. I want to understand more about the topic.

message 13: by Wobbley (new)

Wobbley | 207 comments I'll try to read this one. It sounds pretty interesting. Last year I read The Martian Chronicles, which is a similar format I think (connected short stories, also scifi), and I quite enjoyed that one. Hopefully this one will hold up as well!

Quinty (Taylor's Version) (queenq) | 278 comments I just ordered my copy but didn't realise it was short stories. Hopefully I'll still like it, even though I'm usually not really a fan of short form

message 15: by Karen (new)

Karen (rhyta) | 3 comments I have had this on my TBR list forever since it is a classic. I think it would be a good change of pace for me to read, I didn't realize that it was a set of short stories originally. Count me in.

message 16: by lethe (new)

lethe | 102 comments I'm also planning to read this.

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 402 comments I am listening to the audio version on CD. Still on disk 1.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) | 689 comments I read this in elementary school: while I remember this detail, I can’t remember anything about the book at all. I have had the novel for decades sitting on my shelf, but never picked it up. Today, after the first story, I am both smiling and a bit teary at the same time. Asimov, you were such a good writer!

message 19: by Karen (new)

Karen (rhyta) | 3 comments Just started last night, found myself drawn in quickly. Strange to read dates that are contemporary but were futuristic when Asimov wrote this. Think I am going to like this.
