Margo, I'm replying to a comment you left in the 2022 thread just before it was closed for the year. I always get mad when I see this! I've been known to yell (and maybe even curse) at it. lol

I've been having a weird issue with Goodreads lately where it will randomly log me out when I search for a book sometimes. So, I can read about the book, but not see what my GR friends thought or add it to a shelf until I log back in. However, when I log in it brings me to the GR home page, so I have to research for the book, which logs me out... I've been known to yell at this one as well.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments It's kind of condescending to be told to go read a book, isn't it?

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments Is anyone experiencing this problem also on GR: the books that I've finished this year, don't show in my 'read' - shelf. When I add the starting reading date on Jan. 1st, it doesn't show. When I change it to 2nd, it does show.
And the numbers ordening my books are gone...

No, I think it's funny. Isn't that hat e do hen not of on GR? ;-p

I'm having a "w" issue. That key is sticking. I try to manually try a bit every day and after I'm done I have to proof read and go go and stick that letter in really hammer the key. I am doing my best to avoid that damn letter!

That happened to me ith the book I started on jan 1st! I changed the start date to the day I finished. My TBR list is still numbered though.

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments @Margo: yes, I've solved that by changing the start date and it's fixed now.

The position numbers still aren't back. I've marked the 'position' button on, but nothing. I have to count my TBR - pile manually then, oops.

Sarah | 18549 comments Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you've all had great christmas and new years so far. I had one of the best Christmases I've had in a long time. And new year for that matter. Saw my family and friends and the new (ish) boyfriend. It was nice to have a bit of time off work too.

I decided to go for it and signed up for the part time Psychology degree with the OU. Start on 4th Feb and I'm very excited. I just treated myself to a new tablet for note taking too. I've just come off one of my asthma meds which had a whole heap of side effects, quite a few which I was experiencing including memory and concentration issues which has caused me some problems over the last year or so. I think it has actually made a difference already so fingers crossed, I might be able to get back in to reading generally, not just for uni. I did buy a couple books with my xmas money.

I had my snowboarding lessons and got an elbow injury. Not good timing considering I fly out on Sunday for the actual snowboarding holiday. I'm having a few sports massage sessions and hopefully it will be as good as it can be. Just need to learn not to put my hands out when I fall.

Kristie | 19123 comments Happy New Year, Sarah! Glad to hear that things seem to be going well for you! I hope your elbow is good enough for your upcoming snowboarding trip. That should be a lot of fun. Weird that we need to learn how to fall, but so true.

I had the strangest Christmas I've ever had. It actually seems pretty unreal when I describe it, but everyone is doing well now so it's all good. I've added an extra trip back to New Hampshire to visit family and friends that I wasn't able to see in December, so that should be good.

I wanted to go to The Great Wolf Lodge for my grandson's birthday one year, but they were completely booked! It looks like a fabulous place. Have a wonderful time and let us know what you think of it. Good luck getting your reading done! :)

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments @Sarah: it seems you had a really nice vacation. I'm happy for you that you've enjoyed it. To put your hands first is a natural reflection of the body. It's difficult to not use that mindset. I hope you're snowboard vacation will go smooth.

@Tricia: that sounds like a fun vacation to do and with some reading as a bonus. We've got something similar in Belgium too.

I'm so behind on my lessons for vet tech. The first year was hard, but I flew through it. Now I haven't done any exams yet and I'm way behind on my preperations...I hate it, because I really love doing this.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Enjoy your snowboard vacation, Sarah!

Tricia, sounds lovely. I wish you lots of extra reason time.

Saar, I know it is hard to handle a job, a career, and family obligations. Is there chance you can take a couple of days off at work to catch up with your lessons?

Saar The Book owl | 2647 comments I work in a rotation systeem with 5 other collegues. So, weekends, holidays, weekdays...and I don't work every day. I've reduced in working hours, but still, it feels like I'm always behind on the lessons. I've got 12 exams I need to plan. In comparisson with last year, I've did that time last year 2 exams in January already. Now, I haven't done anything. It's just that huge feeling of failure I have. I need to stop with the self pity, haha. Also, it's distance learning. Occasionally, we've got practicum lessons on Friday, but every student's schedule is different, due to our different situations, so the physical contact between my group has reduced a lot instead of last year. The group is on What's app, but also occasionaly.

January. MOnday - Friday : Work work work work work

Weekend #1 ~ Western dressage team practice, trail ride with friends, which ended badly for one of them with her horse dumping her and her ending up in the ER with a major concussion, but turned out ok for me and my horse, who got really badly spooked as well, but trusted me to take care of her so she didn't get stupid about things.

This morning - Wed (hump day) - I killed a buck crossing the road. He was under my truck before I ever saw him. Turned about to "make sure" and of course, had to end his suffering because while he was dying, he wasn't dying fast enough, so I had to help him go out. Great way to start the day. ::sigh::

Weekend #2 ~ coming up: Open Horse Show Judge's clinic on Saturday. Hauling a horse from OKC to Hot Springs Sun. Since the library is closed on Monday for MLK day, if I end up having to stay overnight in HS, I can manage it.

Weekend #3 ~ next weekend: Dressage Team practice on Saturday. Bonnie and I are really connecting, and I'm looking forward to show season! Sunday I'm taking a friend trail riding (nothing like last weekend though. We're going to the local trail stable where my husband broke horse is stabled so she will have a reliable horse to ride).

Weekend #4 ~ last weekend of Jan: First Western Dressage show of the year. Bonnie and I will get our baseline scores from a neutral judge and we'll see what we need to do to improve.

And that's January done.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments Wow Pat! Busy woman!

I'm so sorry about the buck. I hit a deer one morning. It rolled over the trunk of my car, rolled on the pavement, got up and ran off into the bush. I hope it survived, but I don't know. I was sick about the whole thing and I can imagine how you feel.

I'm ok, for real. The part that makes me sick is when it's something like what happened to you - you hit it, you go back to check, it's gone, and you just don't know. This one, I was able to alleviate suffering, so that was at least what I could do in the situation.

It's that time of year - this is the third deer killed in a two mile stretch of road to work during the morning between 7 and 7:15. It's not yet light enough to actually see them, but it's light enough for them to start thinking about bedding down for the day. So they're moving and they're invisible and then they're on the road, and between vehicle and deer, vehicle wins (although sometimes barely).

This guy was young and healthy, just a spike buck, and while he was definitely intent on suicide, he wasn't big enough to be a kamikaze, so I got off lucky.

BTW ~ If you are ever in this situation and you want to help the animal but aren't sure what to do..... pinch the nose closed and cover the mouth in one hand, then shut off the throat blood vessels with your other one. It's about the fastest thing you can do, the animal will be too weak to struggle much, and it will go inside a couple of minutes. Obviously, if you carry a weapon, that would be faster, but I don't. I just carry rope and rags.

message 35: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments That's so sad. I don't think I could kill a deer with my bare hands. Even two minutes would feel like forever. My dog has a deer she used to play with. They would run back and forth along our fence and it was really cute. She (the deer) was hit by a car and must have run off. She came to our house to die. It was so sad. She was weak and just slowly dying. We called animal services who wouldn't come out, but we were able to convince the police to take care of it. They dragged her out back into the woods and shot her. It was pretty heartbreaking.

message 36: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I also think it would be hard for me to kill an animal with my bare hands, although I understand how horrible it is to let it suffer. I hope I do not find myself in that situation any time soon.

message 37: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments The deer I hit actually hit me. I saw him coming, racing across the field obviously spooked by something. I started braking to avoid a collision. He hit my trunk. If I had not braked I would have been past him. But you see something like that and instinct takes over.

We have a lot of animals hit on the roads in Alberta. Outside of Banff, on the No. 1 Highway, they've built overpasses at high animal crossing spots. Plus they've fenced all along the highway so they're kind of herded to the overpass. Apparently, it's been quite successful.

The last time I was on the parkway, I noticed the overpasses have small trees and shrubs growing on them. I still haven't seen an animal on them. They probably cross more at dusk or dawn.

message 38: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments I love seeing the animal overpasses. I've driven by a couple in my travels and I love the idea. Glad they are working.

Waw, that's a lot, Pat! Are you a horse trainer for your job? That must've been scary for your friend, but gladly it turned out okay. You had a lot of gut to end the buck's life, but it was the right way to do. I can't imagine how it must feel getting an animal hit by car, because I don't have a license, but I would definately be in shock.

@Kirstie: that was a heartbreaking thing to happen, but it seems the deer trusted you, your dog...enough to come to die. That can give a bit of comfort.

The animal overpasses are a great thing. We've got them too for deers, wolves, frogs...

Yes, Saar. My daughters get along very well fortunately. My younger daughter was ready for a career change and my older daughter recommended her for a position at the vet hospital she works at, so they both work together now. My younger daughter enjoys it and loves learning all the vet tech stuff, so she decided to go back to school for it.

I completely agree. I felt terrible about the deer, but she must have felt comfortable here. My poor pup still looks for her when the other deer come by, but none of them want to play with her. In fairness, she barks at them to get their attention in an effort to "call them over," so if I was a deer I'm sure I would avoid that noise and steer clear too. lol

message 43: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Such sad deer stories.. we have overpasses for animals too. And many roads where deer cross have reflectors all along them, so that deer get scared by reflections of head lights and don't cross.

Still there are accidents, but it's not very common.

message 44: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments I live in an area where we have loads of deer. I can come home and easily find a dozen deer in my backyard. My yard abuts conservation land, so just about every evening they are hanging out back there at some point. We have passed them in front yards while walking the dogs, even during daylight hours at times. I actually have a picture of my smaller dog playing with a deer in my backyard before we put up the fence while my grandson was playing in the pool right nearby. They are a frequent occurrence here.

The problem is that we aren't talking about roads that would have overpasses. These are mostly residential areas that have a lot of wooded areas. We just have to drive as carefully as possible.

message 45: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yeah, you can't really compare different countries on this. I'm sure the Netherlands is nothing compared to the US or Canada.

message 46: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Even within the US there is a huge difference. There are areas where you may never see a deer and others, like mine, where you see them all the time. I do wish we had the animal crossings over some of our busier roads (highway, freeway, etc - we even call them different things in different areas here). I don't remember if I've seen any in the US, so if we have them here they aren't common enough.

I'm in the U.S. as well, and I'd never even heard of these animal overpasses until this conversation. It sounds like a really good idea. Here in the midwest, there are car/deer accidents on a daily basis. It's really sad.
