Araych | 676 comments Flesh Wounds Flesh Wounds (Inspector Troy, #5) by John Lawton by John Lawton

Inspector Troy #5. FYI publishing dates of books in the series does not match the actions within. London, 1959 (mostly) in which Troy is at war with a pair of bloodthirsty twin villains. Wonderfully done but the action moves back and forth in time so one should pay attention. Another fine entry in an exceptional series, part mystery and part thriller. 4 stars.

Silver Nitrate Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Very good ghost/horror story set in 1990s Mexico City, involving an unfinished horror film, the director who wants to complete it, the cult that wants it completed, sorcerers, molten devil dogs, and a couple of film buffs in over their heads.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting A COOL BREEZE ON THE UNDERGROUND by Don Winslow. This is the new 30th anniversary hardcover reprint of Winslow’s first novel, which was initially published way back in 1991. It earned nominations for both the Edgar Award and Shamus Award as Best First Mystery Novel and was followed by four more novels in the series featuring former street kid and now grad student / private sleuth Neal Carey.

Winslow is one of my favorite authors and I only discovered him a few years ago, so I am glad to see that his first series is being reprinted, as the word on the street is that he is going to retire once he finishes his final book in his City trilogy.

I really like his work too, James. I hate to see him retire. He wrote some books in German and I would love it if those were translated into English someday.

Winslow does a lot of political commentating on Twitter so if you like that sort of thing he's a good follow. Also, if you like audiobooks, he published some short stories on Audible that are free with the monthly paid membership (I forget what they call it these days).

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments Princess Diana may have been the last truly shining light in the British royal family. Children's author Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara doesn't shy away from the divorce and bulimia - unusual for a children's picture book - but focuses on her well-known kindness to all.

-----------------------------------------

I have read most of Winslow's stuff minus his Neal Carey series which is being reprinted for the 30th anniversary of its release. I'm not much for audiobooks but I think that if some of his novels (The Force and the Cartel trilogy) get translated into feature films that his publishers will come out with print versions of his audio stuff PDQ.

While I am sorry to hear that he is hanging it up as a writer, I hope (given his comments on social media) that he will maybe run for office in the near future. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders.
