James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting THE SMALL BOAT OF GREAT SORROWS by Dan Fesperman, his second novel featuring former Bosnian detective Vlado Petric.

I read the first book in the series earlier this year and really enjoyed it. But there doesn't appear to be any more Petric books in the future, as Fesperman has moved on to writing mostly stand alone novels.

Finished Castle Skull by John Dickson Carr (1931). Castle Skull, which, like its predecessor It Walks by Night, is a bit on the theatrical side, but between the two, I liked the first one better. I've already read his third Bencolin book, so it's on to #4, The Lost Gallows: A London Mystery.

in non-mystery reading, I've finished Study for Obedience a sort of non-plot driven novel that was good but overly boggy readingwise. Now reading Prophet Song by Paul Lynch, a novel in which Ireland finds itself becoming a totalitarian state. So far it's really good.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9973 comments The Night House The Night House by Jo Nesbø by Jo Nesbø

Mystery writer Jo Nesbo dips a toe into the horror genre here, and the creepy crawly story is appropriate for YA and adult readers.

Fun book, good for the Halloween season. 3 stars

I remember seeing Robin Cook's book Coma, turned into a film by him with Michael Crichton. It seemed awfully scary way back then (1978), and much as I enjoy medical stories, I think his thrillers might be too much for me! I see from his bio that he is considered the creator of the medical thriller. As he says, we will all be patients sometime!

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments I've enjoyed several of Amazon's Original Stories, this one in particular. The Scenic Route is by Christina Baker Kline. A woman tells us why she took to the road in a small van, because staying put was destroying her. Good short read.
The Scenic Route by Christina Baker Kline My review of The Scenic Route

If you're a NetGalley reviewer, the story will be archived on Sept 15.
