These inventive Backstories of famous (and infamous) people are an entertaining collection by Simon Van der Velde. The reader isn't told who they are, but there are clues to trigger your memory or send you down your favourite 'research' rabbithole.

Rainbow's End
by Martha GrimesRichard Jury #13. I've been reading the series in order and I found this entry rather weak. Much too much description of the characters ruminations about relationships, weather, smoking, and everything else. Also I could have done without the Cripps family completely. I actually found myself skipping pages which I never do. I did like the descriptions of New Mexico, though--1 of my favorite places. 3 stars.
Lenny Marks Gets Away With Murder
by Kerryn MayneAn outstanding story of a 37 year old primary school teacher who loves watching Friends re-runs, plays Scrabble with her imaginary friend named Monica and who rarely, if ever, socialises. But she also has a past that she has repressed, until the arrival of a letter from the parole board.

The Bedroom Window by K.L. SlaterKL SlaterA great psychological thriller. Here's my 5* review

I finished this short novel about a small European town occupied by an invading force:
The Moon Is Down by John Steinbeck
Rating: 4 stars

I finished another short novel, this one an update of - or response to - The Horror at Red Hook by H.P. Lovecraft:
The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle
Rating: 3 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Although The Horror at Red Hook is not one of Lovecraft's best stories, and it is brewing over with hateful xenophobia and racism, I would still recommend reading it first in order to fully appreciate La Valle's story.

Thanks Nancy! I liked it a lot, pulled up short of loving it, but the writing...WOW!

I thoroughly enjoyed this genre-bending scifi-police procedural. How does the world cope when everyone suddenly goes blind and can we trust the technology that replaces our natural vision?

Re the writing: that's what I love about it. She is amazing and it kills me that her books are being taken out of libraries. Gah!

I just finished The Ballad of Black Tom, too, and agree with your assessment. LaValle takes dross and if he doesn't exactly spin it into gold, he makes it a better thread. (And he doesn't stretch his analogies past the breaking point.)

Random House has so kindly offered to sponsor a book giveaway contest for the group's members. The title in this contest is Lorenzo Carcaterra's Nonna Maria and the Case of the Missing Bride. There are ten copies on offer, and the contest will run through May 25th, after which they will choose the winners randomly. The only catch is that you must be willing to provide your home address to Emma (privately, of course) at Random House so that winners can receive their books through the mail.
If you would like to one of the ten lucky people who might win a copy, the thread is here:

I have a feeling that if this is successful, we might see more giveaways in the group's future.

What a pity I didn't see this title on NG. I would have loved to read it.
Quarry's Choice by Max Allan CollinsI do enjoy a good hard boiled crime novel in the classic style and this hitman vehicle delivers with all the violence and sleaze combined with good, crisp dialogue that you'd expect from the classic era.

Los Angeles Noir
This is an anthology of 17 short stories about crime, passion and betrayal in Los Angeles. I thought 2 or 3 stories were really exceptional and a few others I just paged thru. I did love the descriptions of the various parts and neighborhoods of L.A., a city where I lived for many years. I thought the collection a bit uneven -- 3 stars.
I've finished reading Green for Danger by Christianna Brand. When I can't figure out the who, even in a closed-circle mystery, I'm beyond satisfied. I also recently bought her Heads You Lose, the first book in this particular series. Now for the film.
Weyward
is a great combo of historical fiction, magic realism and mystery. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
One of my favourites, acclaimed Irish author John Boyne never writes the same thing twice. The Absolutist is a powerful story of the boys who met in the army and fought in WWI in the muddy trenches of France. It is both wonderful and awful.
5★ My review of The Absolutist
Down the River Unto the Sea

Blue Skies
by T.C. BoyleGlobal warming is real and T.C. Boyle highlights some of the unfortunate consequences in this seriocomic, climate fiction novel. California is getting drier, Florida is getting wetter, and we observe the effects through the eyes of a family split between the coasts.
Compelling story with interesting characters 4 stars

Drowning by T.J. Newman is an edge-of-the-seat disaster thriller that chucks every possible cliffhanger scenario at its victims. A very fast paced plot set underwater. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Marylebone Drop by Mick HerronA little op within the MI5 / Slough House misfits. John Bachelor seemed like a more sad sack character than before. Well narrated and a clever story but not very humorous. But still it was appreciated for the backdrop of the Snow White ops and Lech's story.

Conspirators on the Dark Web don't need someone to have an internet presence in order to target them. In Aussie author Ashley Kalagian-Blunt's unsettling new book, Dark Mode, anyone is fair game - game as in being hunted for sport. Watch yourself!
4★ My review of Dark Mode
I finished The Removal Man by R.J. Parker
Nice but not suprising:
