The Short Story Club recently read Separating written in 1974 by John Updike. An American couple is deciding how to tell their four teens that they are splitting up. American suburban angst.
4★ My review of Separating with a link to the story online.
Pond is a curious meandering through the narrator's mind by Claire-Louise Bennett. Some stories are pointedly funny and self-deprecating, some are dreamy and philosophical.
4.5~5★ My review of Pond
Everybody Knows
is my kind of thriller. Almost believable with a strong female lead. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Christine wrote: "I can highly recommend "Travels with Charley" by John Steinbeck."I read that one a few months ago. I really enjoyed the first two thirds of the book but I felt like it fell off in the final leg of the trip, somewhere around Texas specifically. I was also disillusioned to learn that Steinbeck made up most of the experiences he had on the trip.
I finished the French thriller
The 10:30 From Marseille (AKA The Sleeping Car Murders) by Sébastien Japrisot
Rating: 3 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
and I started reading
Vanish in an Instant by Margaret Millar
The Bull in the Darkness and the One-Eyed Dog: Scenes from the Life of a Country Veterinarian by Robert T. SharpSecond book of entertaining stories from an Ohio veterinarian. Dr. Sharp writes, "Here are some new examples of why most veterinarians think we have the world's coolest job."
The tales are funny, touching, sad, tragic, uplifting, and more. 3.5 stars

Runner by Tracy Clark the 4th book in her Chicago Mystery series featuring PI Cass Raines. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
City of Dreams
is a worthy successor to City on Fire. My 4.5 star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've finished reading The Nine Tailors for the group read this month. I have a question. Why would so many people vote for this book and then not bother to read it? It's a bit on the boggy side but the mystery at its core is solid.
Nancy wrote: "I've finished reading The Nine Tailors for the group read this month. I have a question. Why would so many people vote for this book and then not bother to read it? It's a bit on the ..."I didn't vote for it and I did comment, but I'd already read the book

I finished the second book in the "Beloved trilogy:"
Jazz by Toni Morrison
Rating: 4 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
...not really a "thriller" but there is a murder.
An Evil Heart
by Linda CastilloIn this addition to the series, Police Chief Kate Burkholder investigates the brutal murder of a young Amish man on Rumspringa.
Good mystery set in Painters Mill, Ohio. 3.5 stars

Going a bit retro this week with THE FOURTH PROTOCOL by Frederick Forsyth. I haven't read a Forsyth book in several years and this one, published back in 1984, was adapted into a movie in 1987 starring Michael Caine and Pierce Brosnan. My wife really liked the movie, so I relented and picked up a paperback copy to sample.
I read Death at Whitewater Church by. Andrea Carter. It is book 1 in the series and I recommend it to cozy mystery fans. My 4 star review. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I'm caught between reading what I really want to read and finishing up reading possible selections for my IRL book group's list for when we come back together in September. The good news is that I have to have it finished by the end of May so I can get back to normal shortly.
Still reading Green for Danger and so far, although I haven't made much progress, I think it's going to be a good one.

I Will Find You

Loyalty
is part historical fiction, part mystery. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Still sticking with the Jack Reacher series although I'm definitely not enjoying the more recent entries as comprehensively as I did the early stuff. Here's my review for No Plan B by Lee Childhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Six Ostriches
by Philipp SchottThis Dr. Bannerman Vet Mystery is set in a Canadian town in early spring. It features animal desecration, Nordic cults, murder, tattoos, and a good sniffer dog.
Engaging cozy-ish mystery in an interesting setting. 3.5 stars
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
CBRetriever wrote: "cozy = animal desecration?"Yeah I know, it doesn't fit perfectly. But the book has that small town cozyish vibe. We need a new sub-genre for these kinds of books.
Dawoud/Dawit/David's attempt to get from Eritrea to Israel meant he had to keep changing his identity and left him feeling like black foam, tossed around but never allowed to settle. In Black Foam: A Novel by Eritrean author Haji Jabir, you can see what he's up against. Moving and eye-opening.
4★ My review of Black Foam
