2023 Monthly Reads

I loved Fayne! I am giving it 4.5* for now. Perhaps that will go down after discussing. Without any spoilers, I found it a bit too long. The last portion of the book could have been edited a bit. Maybe the author didn’t want to say goodbye to the characters. I loved the writing, so many beautiful sentences.
There are definitely some discussions about Charles and Charlotte I want to have when everyone is ready.

Like others I am living Fayne! I’m about 25% in. Just figured out “the condition” and have to say that I had no idea that that was the foundation of this book! Cannot wait to keep going. I’ve still got a long way ahead here… so if someone wants to start a thread where spoilers are okay, I’ll join in when ready - near the end of the summer probably.

I already have another great book to recommend to those who have loved this one, but I don’t want to give anything away. I will post it elsewhere.

Agree with others - writing and Charlotte are both fantastic!

Just hit a wall with Fayne. Loved part one with Charlotte. Then started part two, and realized we were back in time with Henry and Marie, and...I just don't care that much. Neither of them is really interesting, and I know where they end up.

Will keep plugging, but I hope this section isn't too long.

@Joanna- I can relate, I've stalled out a bit on part 2 myself. It's reminding of a line "let's skip to the good part". But the my reader guilt takes over and implores me to savor even the boring bits, so I'll keep hanging on. Is it just me or does anyone else have the dictionary on the ready for some of these old English terms? I am a reader who when I come upon a word I don't know, I look it up as part of my personal learning but this book has been a lot of new words for me :) I hope I can finish by end of summer.

Oh no! Disappointing! I’m still in the Charlotte section and am still loving the story.

Made it to part 3 and got roped right back in - even though it's still Henry and Marie, it's about the discovery of and reaction to the Condition so it's more interesting than their courting. But oh man now I'm feeling rage.

(view spoiler)[The apparently historical fact that they didn't think babies could feel pain so didn't use anaesthetic for operations on them? What? What! It almost feels like that fact could have been the prompt for the whole book.

Also, I really want to slap Henry. Learn how to have a conversation, man! (hide spoiler)]

Finished! It lost me again a bit at the end, for a couple of reasons. But overall, a very good book that I'm glad I read.

(view spoiler)[I didn't like how everyone was connected in the end, it just wrapped up way too tightly, with Gwen being Miss Gourley's daughter, Margalo being Margaret's, Bryn being the Blighted Heir. Also the very end with the few page overview of about a century of time moved way too quickly. It's funny, with about a hundred pages to go, I figured the book was going to end with Charlie heading off on their own, and wanted to know what their future held, but I think I would have preferred that to this, which just felt like such a rush to wrap things up. Done Fayne! I've migrated over to the Fayne thread. Spoiler alert - I LOVED it!

At the beginning I said "at this size, it's going to take me all summer." I finished it today on Labour Day! :)
