Hi all - just checking in to see if there is some interest in some monthly reads that coincide with our BINGO squares? we could do a group read, buddy reads or even meet online for discussions. thoughts?

message 2: by Tina (new)

Tina Wilson | 70 comments Fantastic idea!

message 3: by Petra (new)

Petra | 708 comments I don't participate in Bingo, but would like a group read (if I can join without the Bingo part). A group read would be fun.

message 4: by Alan (new)

Alan Scheer | 150 comments I’m retired so have more time to read. Would enjoy a group read.

message 5: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 546 comments A group read sounds like a great idea. It could coincide with our BINGO squares.

Alan Scheer | 150 comments Any interest in the new Lisa Moore?

Sounds great to have some interest... we will connect the books to BINGO squares but participating in BINGO is not a requirement for joining the fun of a Monthly Read.

Alan - I don't know what her newest book is about. does it fit a square?

message 8: by Alan (new)

Alan Scheer | 150 comments I don’t know. I think it’s about a mother and her son is beaten up-I just like her,but anything will be fine with me.
I can’t remember how we do this-do we set a date when we can talk about what we read?

message 9: by Rainey (new)

Rainey | 746 comments This Is How We Love

Is her new book

message 10: by Susan (new)

Susan | 852 comments It’s set in winter, so it could fit into the “read in the same season” square.

message 11: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments I'm interested! And the Lisa Moore book sounds like it could generate some discussion.

Sounds like we have interest in This Is How We Love so this can be our inaugural group read of 2023. Thank you, Alan, for the suggestion!

Let's try and keep spoilers out of the conversation until mid January.

message 13: by Alan (new)

Alan Scheer | 150 comments Both kobo and kindle copies are 4.99 right now.

good morning!! As we ponder our group read for February, i am going to suggest that we concentrate on BINGO square 01 - a book that inspires positivity. Not only is it Heart and Stroke month but it February also contains Random Acts of Kindness Day. our world needs more positivity to keep us healthy and happy!! Any suggestions for a book meeting this criteria???

message 17: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisafriel) | 210 comments Great idea Susan! I am hoping one of the CR shortlist will fit this criteria. A few more days to wait.

message 18: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments I wonder about a book by Humble The Poet? "Things No One Else Can Teach Us" or "Un Learn 101 Simple Truths for a Better Life"? I've not read either, I find him humorous and compelling.

message 19: by ❀ Susan (new)

❀ Susan (susanayearofbooksblogcom) | 3979 comments Mod
Humble the Poet was so great and positive when he participated in Canada Reads!!

I would also suggest any of the books by Neil Pasricha such as The Book of Awesome, You Are Awesome: How to Navigate Change, Wrestle with Failure, and Live an Intentional Life, The Happiness Equation: Want Nothing + Do Anything = Have Everything or Our Book of Awesome: A Celebration of the Small Joys That Bring Us Together. He has such a positive approach despite a difficult backstory and makes people smile with simple things.

message 20: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments Wondering what the group decided to pick for February read? Hoping to seek out a copy of the choice from the library this month.

A few future ideas: Bad Cree and Last Winter These meet G3 and I 1 for me in the BINGO plans.

message 21: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments Hi folks - wow, I seem to have been missing all kinds of notifications on Good Reads. Looks like I missed a good conversation about whether we'll be doing Monthly Reads here. I'd love to join in when I can. Were there books chosen beyond Jan?

message 22: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments I remain interested- anyone want to join me in picking some books?

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments Me too! We should pick something for April.

message 24: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 546 comments Sounds like a great idea Wanda and Allison hikes the bookwoods.

sounds like a great idea!! any book suggestions?

message 26: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments I will put forward Bad Cree by Jessica Johns- any interest for this one? It does hit several BINGO spaces.

message 27: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments or Far Cry by Alissa York?

message 28: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments another book: VenCo by Cherie Dimaline

message 29: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments Tomorrow for April 1st I'm going to start VenCo by Cherie Dimaline if anyone wishes to join me for a buddy read.

Hi All - we have not done too well with the monthly reads but then again, life is busy!!

is there any interest in a summer read?

message 32: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments I know, Susan! Always seems like such a good idea, and then I just cannot commit! Ugh. I'd be interested, possibly. I'm trying not to buy new books and read those I have, so if it were one I already own, I'd be in! How about any of these... any interest?

Fayne - a long one, so maybe we do it over the summer?

The Dishwasher - was on the CR longlist a couple of years ago

The Sleeping Car Porter - am I the only one who hasn't read this?

Care Of: Letters, Connections, and Cures - how about a nonfiction that's a series of letters? Good for a summer read?

message 33: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 465 comments I’m also on a book buying hiatus, and am trying to catch up on books I already own, but if I can get it from library I would be in.

message 34: by Tina (new)

Tina Wilson | 70 comments Hi All! My shelves are overflowing as well and I love it! I own Fayne and would love a subtle push to start it. Given more time to read it, I think this book would have many channels of conversation.

message 35: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments I had a look at people’s lists. Looks like most of us have not read Fayne… maybe it could be a group summer project??

message 36: by ❀ Susan (new)

❀ Susan (susanayearofbooksblogcom) | 3979 comments Mod
I love the idea of Fayne as I received it from my amazing secret sender and have not got to it yet!! Great suggestion!!

message 37: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments Let’s do it! Everyone okay with that? Heather - does the library have it? Tina - here is your nudge!

I’m going to start it tonight. I happen to have just finished a couple of books & need to choose my next! Perfect timing for me.

message 38: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments I'll join but will need to get a copy very soon- it's a book that I've wanted to read for some time- and don't have it on my shelf. Good choice!

message 39: by Tina (new)

Tina Wilson | 70 comments Wonderful, excited for this big read!

message 40: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 465 comments I put hold on it at library, we will see how long it takes

message 41: by Karin (new)

Karin | 174 comments I'm trying to read lighter fare over the summer plus have couple of other long reads I'm doing, but I hope you all enjoy it!

message 42: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Miller | 3 comments Looking forward to joining a group read someday soon but I don't think Fayne is for me. I will monitor the group to see what is next!

message 43: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments I'm about 12% in and it's so fun! I am loving Fayne. It's a big undertaking from me, but I'm loving the writing, the characters and the scenery. Anyone decided to jump in too?

message 44: by ❀ Susan (new)

❀ Susan (susanayearofbooksblogcom) | 3979 comments Mod
I will get to it soon!!

message 45: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments I did purchase the book, hoping to start it this weekend!

message 46: by Tina (new)

Tina Wilson | 70 comments I also have just started and am loving the writing!!
The size is intimidating but I believe the story will keep me engaged enough to not fear picking it up.
Happy Long Weekend to all.

message 47: by Ellen (last edited Jun 29, 2023 05:32AM) (new)

Ellen | 51 comments Now I'm intrigued! I loved Ann-Marie MacDonald's Fall on Your Knees.... but did not like The Way the Crow Flies at all. Adult Onset was just so-so. As a result, I'm kind of afraid to invest in Fayne. Will watch this conversation for everyone's thoughts and impressions of it as you all make your way through this tome.🌼

message 48: by Alan (new)

Alan Scheer | 150 comments I have [Fayne] on my ereader and it does sound interesting but it’s just too long for me to take on right now.

message 49: by Karin (new)

Karin | 174 comments Is anyone interested in reading something light and Canadian this summer? I'm thinking of the Nigerian-Canadian romance Ties That Tether by Jane Igharo for some lighter fare -- more of a beach read.

message 50: by Joanna G (new)

Joanna G (joanna_g) | 120 comments Just started Fayne, and am really loving it so far. At one point though, during a description of Charlotte's walk through the moors, I was like 'this is slow and overly detailed, why do I love it?' but something about it just sucked me right in!

I quite enjoy Charlotte as a character and am curious about her Condition. Just reached the point where she's decided to keep the tutor.

Will there be a thread for Fayne?
