I started reading more Sword and Sorcery tales by the creator of Conan the Barbarian
Kull: Exile of Atlantis by Robert E. Howard
Howard of course was an admirer of Lovecraft, and many of his stories have a horror-esque feel to them.
Finished Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar, which I'd call horror-adjacent, a serial killer novel written in the form of a true crime book. Compelling. By the time I finished the first chapter, I didn't want to stop reading.Just started Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Only three chapters in, but it's intriguing. So far I'd identify it as horror/dark fantasy; the sketched in background on vampire breeds/clans reads more like world-building fantasy, but the darker aspects look to be lurking in the background.
Voices in the Snow
I just started this. I read From Below by the same author and loved it so I wanted to try another by her!

Let me know what you think of it. I've got several books going right now so they're all taking me a while to get through but I can't wait to see where Black Tide goes.

I just recently read that as well. It was a quick read, but I agree with WendyB! The main characters were so annoying. The premise was really interesting though! Wish the author had dived in a little more. The story has so much potential. I hope the author continues on and makes a second book and dives in a bit deeper and makes the two main characters a little less whiney and wishy-washy.
I know this isn't TECHNICALLY horror, but it seems pretty dark!
Haunting Adeline
Not sure how I feel about it so far, but I keep hearing how popular it is! Has anyone else read this?
ChlorineI saw this described as "part horror, part coming of age story" and was sold! It's got everything: queer longing, mermaids, racism, body horror! I got sucked into this world very easily. Good stuff
If You Tell: a True Story of Murder, Family Secrets, and the Unbreakable Bond of Sisterhood If You TellThis isn't exactly horror, but so far it's terrifying.

I can't wait to read this!
I am reading Sleep Alone by J.A.W. McCarthy which is about a perpetually touring and hungry rock band of succubi.I'm also reading The Sea of Ash by Scott Thomas, which is a wonderfully Lovecraftian story.
Monica wrote: "I'm reading Lovesickness and other stories by Junji Ito. Another one by him I'm enjoying."That's one of my favorites of his!

It's good. I'm liking everything I read by him really. Even though Tombs and other stories I think I liked a bit more. There were some stories that stuck with me.

I'll be interested to hear what you have to say about that.

I’ve blown hot and cold with Oates in the past, but so far this one is red-hot. I’m loving it.

It seems to divide readers, like a lot of Oates does. It’s great for me so far!

I read Babysitter last year and did not love it. But I didn't hate it either. We'll see if I enjoy The Accursed more.
Benighted—an old-school thriller by J.B. Priestley which was turned into the Boris Karloff movie “The Old Dark House” in the early 1930s. I loved Priestley’s classic creepy play An Inspector Calls, so I’m looking forward to this!

Sounds interesting, I've added it to my tbr.
Books are like Jello, there's always room for more.

Not horror, but still unsettling: I just read Summer Frost and it was very good! I got the audiobook from KU and enjoyed the narrator very much.
Now starting Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier. Basis for a fairly obscure (but actually pretty good) Hitchcock film. Not horror but certainly Gothic.

By Joyce Carol Oates
I used to be a huge Oates fan, but in the past few years I’ve faded away from her writing for some reason. I’m looking forward to seeing if this collection recaptures the old Oates magic for me.
