n1ght.shxde | 4 comments The abandoned area might have been an alleyway or a door leading to somewhere. The cover is orange with children on it, in the traditional 70s art style. I think the back cover has a waterfall on it. The rating on the back cover used the word juxtaposition to describe the book. The book was in English. I think the characters had two boys and two girls. I think the setting was London, England.

Elidor by Alan Garner Elidor by Alan Garner Elidor by Alan Garner

A mechanical street map, a deserted slum, a church in ruins, and a football. Four ordinary things lead the Watson children on an extraordinary adventure to a magical land called Elidor. In pursuit of four ancient treasures, the forces of evil have crossed over into our world, and it falls to the Watson children to find the treasures, seal the bridge between worlds, and guard the strayed unicorn Findhorn . . . even though their heroism may cost them everything.

(There's a mysterious fiddler, a semi-demolished church, a magical portal into a dead-or-dying fantasy realm, standing stones, and enchanted burial mound full of evil with an entrance only the youngest boy of 4 British siblings can open... Bombed-out Manchester. MANY editions of this book.)
