Introduction 2023

Lovely to 'meet' you, Kit.

O, I've just read "The House with the Golden Door" set in Pompeii. Have you read the Wolf Den series?

Kit; Welcome! Fortune Favors the Dead by Stephen Spotswood is on my TBR list. Haven't read this author yet but this series set in 1940's gets good reviews :)

Hello! Lovely to meet you guys too, and I'll be adding that to my tbr!

I just started reading again and found Goodreads. I love historical fiction and thrillers the most. I can’t stop adding to my reading list. It’s so exciting!

Christina; Welcome! This is a great group to find interesting historical fiction titles recommended by members.

Interesting, it made me realise I really like the character focussed stuff, but a good plot never hurts ;-)

Not a problem ;-), that's the sort of thing I'd do.

I joined this group mainly because you are reading Her Lost Words this month 😁 I admit that I'm somewhat obsessed with Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley...
I read a bit of everything, but lately I'm focusing mostly on fiction with queer elements (preferably by queer authors) and other marginalised perspectives. My happy place is cozy fantasy with historical elements, but... yeah...
I'm probably not going to be much active in the group after this read, but I might join here and there. I really enjoy historical fiction, I'm just a bit picky when it comes to it...

Welcome, Jassmine! Haven't read many queer novels although I highly recommend Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo. Set in 1950's San Francisco, California, USA. One of my favorite reads a few years back.

Hi Jassmine, you raise an interesting point because I was excited to read the MW book, she had such an amazing life...but I thought the thread was locked and it wasn't happening :-( I'll go back and investigate further, must be my mistake....

I didn't read that one yet, but it's definitely on my radar!
The one that I really liked (with fantastical elements, kind of Alternate History) is P. Djèlí Clark's series set in beginning of the 20th century Cairo. Beginning with a short-story (that is available for free on tor.com) A Dead Djinn in Cairo
For historical romance, my favourite of last year was easily A Lady for a Duke which follows trans protagonist in Regency (?I think) era and hero with PTSD and a disability. Would definitely recommend if you like historical romance - it is as tropey as one would expect from the genre, but it is really good at getting some historical details right, so it was a really nice read for me.

Yeah, it was locked, but it seems to be alright now 😊 Looking forward to seeing you there!

Welcome!!

I'm Barb and I live in Oregon (USA). I'm happy to be here & I love historical fiction. However, I actually like almost any good book! I'm fairly new to GR, having joined a few months ago. I look forward to chatting with all of you sooner or later.

Welcome, Fellow Oregonian!

Hi Robin!
Great to have another Oregonian in this group. I sent you a friend request. Happy reading!

My name is Sandra and I'm a proud Historical Fictionista :-)
Both an avid reader and historical fiction published author, I'm always on the lookout for the next good read.
Read on!

Hi everyone!
The name I choose to go by is Petal. I am a night owl since forever and am fairly certain that mornings are evil, although I do *have* to wake early enough often. Thus, naps are also my best friend. I'm just now working on adding my books to Goodreads from one of the notebooks I've kept forever. I keep two.. Likely still will even with this site, as I'd like my kids or grandkids (maybe someday) to be able to look back when I'm gone and see what I read and how highly I thought of a book. I keep one from a higher profile source and then I keep one just for fun, things that catch my own eye, etc. I'm always reading two also!
I love all things fiction, almost all genres. I don't love erotica or Christian fiction (not that there's anything wrong with either. Just not for me.) My all-time favorite book is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Fifteen years after reading it for the first time and it's still in my mind! I do have a special soft spot for historical fiction, too. I especially like things set from the middle ages through the 19th century.
I look forward to getting to know some of you and find some more books to add to my neverending list... for reading is life. :-)

Nice to e-meet you all!

I love historical fictions, especially mysteries but in the last year I tried also some clean romance and I loved them.
The genre I hate is horror, no one can persuade me to read it ( or watching on tv ).
I like all historical settings, from the Middle Ages to the Regency, from the Victorian era to the 30s and 40s.
I read mostly in English even if it's not my mother tongue, because I have a wider choice. I understand this foreign language quite well, but I'm not that good at writing, so please, I ask you to excuse any errors in my texts.
Thanks for accepting me in the group :-)
Have a nice day everybody !

I am so excited to be here! My favorite books are anything historical adventure - The Count of Monte Cristo, for example, is one of my all-time favorites. If you all have any recommendations for good historical adventure, I'm all ears!!

Hello, Melissa! Yes, American Girl was one of my favorites when I was younger. What are your favorite American Girl stories/time periods?

Happy October!
I just had to rejoin my groups because somehow I got locked out of Facebook, which is how I had been getting in here. So, I'm starting from scratch & it's going to take me a while to redo my bookshelves. What a pain! I hope everyone is well.

How does one reply to a comment as I have seen others do. What am I missing?

It depends on how you are using Goodreads. If you are using the app, you cannot reply to specific comments. You have to be logged into a desktop version to reply to specific comments.

Agreed, Emma is the best! 😊

I've always lived to read but fell out of it ever since life got busy with University. I've been hoping to get back into reading so I joined goodreads in hopes to rekindle my love for books. Some of my favorite genres are mystery, historical fiction, romance and... surprise surprise, historical romance
If anyone has any good book recommendations I would be happy to read them!

I'm always looking for new books to read, and love that feeling of traveling to somewhere new and stepping into a story.

Welcome, Emily! I've been lurking in this group for a couple of years now. Unlike most people, I'm trying to read less, not more! I have read a number of Cornwell's Sharpe novels, however, and his Gallows Thief. Is that the set you're interested in, or are you more of a fan of The Winter King and his ilk?
