Welcome, Emily! I've been lurking in this group for a couple of years now. Unlike most people, I'm trying to read less, not more! I have read a number of Cornwell's Sharpe novels, however, and his Gallows Thief. Is that the set you're interested in, or are you more of a fan of The Winter King and his ilk?

O, I've just read "The House with the Golden Door" set in Pompeii. Have you read the Wolf Den series?

Kit; Welcome! Fortune Favors the Dead by Stephen Spotswood is on my TBR list. Haven't read this author yet but this series set in 1940's gets good reviews :)

Interesting, it made me realise I really like the character focussed stuff, but a good plot never hurts ;-)

Jassmine | 37 comments Hi, I'm Jassmine, bisexual cis woman from Czech Republic.
I joined this group mainly because you are reading Her Lost Words this month 😁 I admit that I'm somewhat obsessed with Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley...
I read a bit of everything, but lately I'm focusing mostly on fiction with queer elements (preferably by queer authors) and other marginalised perspectives. My happy place is cozy fantasy with historical elements, but... yeah...
I'm probably not going to be much active in the group after this read, but I might join here and there. I really enjoy historical fiction, I'm just a bit picky when it comes to it...

Welcome, Jassmine! Haven't read many queer novels although I highly recommend Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo. Set in 1950's San Francisco, California, USA. One of my favorite reads a few years back.

Hi Jassmine, you raise an interesting point because I was excited to read the MW book, she had such an amazing life...but I thought the thread was locked and it wasn't happening :-( I'll go back and investigate further, must be my mistake....

I didn't read that one yet, but it's definitely on my radar!
The one that I really liked (with fantastical elements, kind of Alternate History) is P. Djèlí Clark's series set in beginning of the 20th century Cairo. Beginning with a short-story (that is available for free on tor.com) A Dead Djinn in Cairo
For historical romance, my favourite of last year was easily A Lady for a Duke which follows trans protagonist in Regency (?I think) era and hero with PTSD and a disability. Would definitely recommend if you like historical romance - it is as tropey as one would expect from the genre, but it is really good at getting some historical details right, so it was a really nice read for me.

Janet Morrison | 5 comments Hi! I'm Janet in North Carolina. I enjoy reading historical fiction and I'm attempting to write my first historical novel. It's harder than it looks! LOL! I most enjoy reading novels set in Colonial and Revolutionary US as well as those set in the World War II Era. I'm currently reading Cradles of the Reich, by Jennifer Coburn.

Kevin Purdy (purdybooks) | 2 comments Hey historical fiction fans. Kevin here. It's great to see such a diverse group of readers in this group. I'm a fan of many different historical fiction books, but my favorite are ones set in England. I especially enjoy novels set in 11th Century England. I don't check my notifications very often, so if you send a message, please be patient. It may take me awhile to realize it's there. I look forward to lively conversations and favorite book recommendations.

Hi everyone!

The name I choose to go by is Petal. I am a night owl since forever and am fairly certain that mornings are evil, although I do *have* to wake early enough often. Thus, naps are also my best friend. I'm just now working on adding my books to Goodreads from one of the notebooks I've kept forever. I keep two.. Likely still will even with this site, as I'd like my kids or grandkids (maybe someday) to be able to look back when I'm gone and see what I read and how highly I thought of a book. I keep one from a higher profile source and then I keep one just for fun, things that catch my own eye, etc. I'm always reading two also!

I love all things fiction, almost all genres. I don't love erotica or Christian fiction (not that there's anything wrong with either. Just not for me.) My all-time favorite book is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Fifteen years after reading it for the first time and it's still in my mind! I do have a special soft spot for historical fiction, too. I especially like things set from the middle ages through the 19th century.

I look forward to getting to know some of you and find some more books to add to my neverending list... for reading is life. :-)

message 78: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Not new, but new again. I'm Bonnie, a retired school psychologist and tend to read one genre mostly for a long while, then switch to another. Historical fiction is one of the genres I love, but had been mostly reading contemporary and mysteries this year. Now that summer is half over, I'm feeling like historical fiction and bigger books again.

message 79: by Amy (last edited Aug 18, 2023 09:35AM) (new)

Amy Kuznia Hello! My name is Amy. My favorite genres are historical fiction, horror, and mysteries. I love to read and live in Minnesota. I just finished The Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley. I loved it! Happy to be among like-minded readers and find new books to check out. Some of my favorite authors are: Kate Morton, Marie Benedict, Kristin Harmel, Kazuo Ishiguro, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Stephen King, Tahereh Mafi, Alice Hoffman and so many others.

Sandy | 17 comments Hi, my name is Sandy. I live in Southern California about 6 miles from Laguna Beacg. I'm retired from a 40 year career. Historical Fiction is my top genre, but I have been straying into other areas, some thrillers. I love Kristen Hannah. I'm in three reading groups here in Irvine and two online and I'm a reviewer in Orange County.

niesye (denniesye) Hi everyone, my name is Cilla from Indonesia and I just recently active on Goodreads. I am determined to read more books and I found myself enjoying Historical Fiction a lot. I explored goodreads to find more recommendations on this genre and saw this group. Thought it would be nice to connect with some people that have the same interest in books :)
Nice to e-meet you all!

DoctorM (aethervoice) | 8 comments Hullo, everyone! I just found the group... I'm from the Deepest South in the US, and I'm a sometime academic historian who has always had a fondness for historical and period fiction. I have a very eclectic taste in periods and settings. I'm looking forward to the discussions!

message 83: by Tiziana (last edited Sep 10, 2023 08:21AM) (new)

Tiziana | 119 comments Hello, my name is Tiziana, almost 52 years old and I'm from Italy.

I love historical fictions, especially mysteries but in the last year I tried also some clean romance and I loved them.
The genre I hate is horror, no one can persuade me to read it ( or watching on tv ).
I like all historical settings, from the Middle Ages to the Regency, from the Victorian era to the 30s and 40s.

I read mostly in English even if it's not my mother tongue, because I have a wider choice. I understand this foreign language quite well, but I'm not that good at writing, so please, I ask you to excuse any errors in my texts.

Thanks for accepting me in the group :-)
Have a nice day everybody !

message 84: by Lee-Anne (new)

Lee-Anne Hi, I'm Lee-Anne. I live in Brisbane, Australia. I will read pretty much anything, but I have a soft spot a mile wide for stories about spies or resistance movements set in WWII.

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 364 comments Hi everyone! Welcome to the new people. I've been on here for ages, but my activity levels dropped off for awhile. My name's Melissa, I like historical fiction and am especially interested in the Revolutionary War and WW2, and got into historical fiction because of American Girl.

message 86: by Cristiana (new)

Cristiana Moyer Hello! I am Cristiana, a reader, writer, and buff of all things history! I love every period in history but the stories that capture my heart the most are those lesser-known stories on the dusty corners of history that people don't often know about. Most of the historical stories I write are pre-20th century.

I am so excited to be here! My favorite books are anything historical adventure - The Count of Monte Cristo, for example, is one of my all-time favorites. If you all have any recommendations for good historical adventure, I'm all ears!!

How does one reply to a comment as I have seen others do. What am I missing?

It depends on how you are using Goodreads. If you are using the app, you cannot reply to specific comments. You have to be logged into a desktop version to reply to specific comments.

Barbara Hi, I'm Barb. I've been on Goodreads for several years - but never knew about Groups until yesterday!!! I belong to a small local book club, but am the only fan of historical fiction in that group, so I needed to branch out. I was SO excited to find this group! I generally have two books going - one physical and one audio for the commute and house cleaning (ugh.) Currently reading The Shell Collector in paperback and The London Séance Society in audio format.

I've always lived to read but fell out of it ever since life got busy with University. I've been hoping to get back into reading so I joined goodreads in hopes to rekindle my love for books. Some of my favorite genres are mystery, historical fiction, romance and... surprise surprise, historical romance

If anyone has any good book recommendations I would be happy to read them!
