I feel like the way to get a lot of "Likes" on GR is to write reviews about books that are unkind and I just can't do that either. If I don't like the book, I don't like the book, but I'm not really on a quest to convert every other person to my point of view. My hope is that everyone likes every single book they pick up, not that they agree with me about which books are good and which are not! I like to see the books you pick, read your thoughts, and try to decide if they'd work for me or not. That's what I like about this site.

I'm going to start a series later this week though. We all knew that wouldn't last very long. But not a series that has 160 books in it! :-)

Exactly. I very rarely "hate on" a book. I always admit that it is probably my mood, the style of writing or my mood. Did I mention my mood??

If I see that the writing is good, regardless of my love for the book, I will recommend and let others draw up their own conclusions.

Never understood reviews that are basically a thesis, outlining why they hate a book. Like, hate it and move on!! LOL

Yes, exactly. I am much more lenient on rating a book when I'm in a good mood, but I can't always read books when I'm in a good mood. My rating of some books says more about me than it does about the book, that's for sure!!

We all like different books, so it stands to reason that we all gravitate to different styles of book reviews too, but I'm like you. If someone is trying too hard to write a thesis to outline all the many reasons they hate the book, I just have to move on. It shouldn't be that hard to mention what worked or what didn't. :-)

Thanks, Martha. I'm partway through The Maid, and I'm not sure about it right now. There's something I really like about it and something I don't. Hopefully, the rest of the book will help me understand some of the stuff in the beginning and I'll be over the moon about it like everybody else. :-)

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments February Mid Month Report

Books Read: 5 books this month and 20 so far this year. 7,271 pages.

Books from Filling in the Gaps: 18/100; 2020 Books 0/1, 2022 Books 1/11, 2023 Books 17/82

Books from 12+4 Challenge: 6/16

Recently Finished:

The Love Hypothesis - I was supposed to buddy read this book with Alissa, but I blazed ahead of her and finished in two days. To be fair, I had a day at work where I was doing some tedious checking and cross checking of numbers which was so boring I could do it listening to my book (ordinarily, I cannot listen to books at work for my job as I'm talking and writing most of the day). It's about a PhD candidate who is trying to convince her super annoying friend Anh that she has moved on from an ex-boyfriend and determines that the most effective way to do that is to persuade a young professor to pretend they are dating. He agrees because he is trying to secure funding and he believes the relationship will highlight his stability and longevity in the department. I didn't agree with how things happened all of the time, because it didn't square with the experiences of people I know, and I hate the pretend dating scenarios, but I was highly entertained the entire time and I think the book pinpointed some very important issues. Besides, how can I not like books with women in STEM? 3.5 STARS

Bossypants - I'm trying to get caught up on all the GRC Awards, and this was one of the books that was missed in 2011. I generally like Tina Fey, but some of the references in this book certainly felt dated, particularly some with reference to Alec Baldwin. That said I thought Amy Poehler's book Yes Please was a little better, but then again, I read that book right after it came out, not years later, and that makes a difference for a book about humor. 3 STARS

I'm Glad My Mom Died - I might be a little bit too old for this one. It's a story about a young child actress who was pressured into acting to fulfill her mom's dream. I have never watched her shows and didn't know who she was until reading this book, so that might be why this one really didn't resonate with me as much as I hoped. She truly experienced some horrible abuse and I noticed that she took some time between the death of her mom and now to seek healing and move forward. I gave it 2 STARS because it was just OK to me. I do hope she continues writing and doing things that she loves and I wish her the very best.

Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human - I didn't have very high expectations for this one and they were kind of fulfilled. It was OK. There are some very obvious differences between the movie Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and this book seeks to bridge some of the differences. I give credit to the author for trying to make it work, and for a solid ending, but the journey was a little bit rocky for me. I'm continuing the series. 2.5 STARS

The Winners - Another buddy read where I just blazed ahead - so sorry Ioana. I didn't want the book to get returned and have to wait again, but if that wasn't the case, I would have taken my time a little bit more and savored the book. I'm already devastated that there aren't any more books written and it ended like that. This book is the third book in the series that starts with Beartown, a story about a hockey town. If you haven't read it and are at all interested, I highly recommend the series. 5 STARS

Currently reading:

The Maid - Oh, Molly. This is a mystery and thriller story about a maid named Molly who enters a hotel room to discover a dead body. Now we have to figure out who done it.

The Office BFFs: Tales of The Office from Two Best Friends Who Were There - I loved The Office TV series, but I didn't listen to the podcasts, so this book has been fun to listen to. I understand that it duplicates a lot of the information on the podcast.

Anne's House of Dreams - I didn't sleep very well last night, so I unfortunately did make a lot of progress on this book.

The Priory of the Orange Tree - Barely started this one. I hope it is good.

Please tell me the professor is not HER professor, and this is not a student-professor relationship. I doubt such a relationship will show stability or maturity....

No worries. Being in the office only 50% of the time is great, but that means only 50% commute time for reading. You did not blaze ahead, I was slow. I still have about 2 hrs to go, and really enjoying it.

He never was HER professor and that's why it seems to be OK. (However, before they were pretending to be dating, he did sit on her panel during the selection process.)

I'm not sure how strictly Stanford would apply Title IX here, but I know that many other universities would not have allowed that relationship.

Patricia, I hope you love The Winners also. To me, it started out slow, but the journey was incredibly worthwhile. Even though Backman absolutely telegraphs where he is going, I still found myself stunned when things happened. I didn't want the book to end.

I'm so glad you're reading Coyote Sunrise, I hope you love Coyote's voice too when you get around to reading it.

I know exactly how it is with the library. It's feast or famine, isn't it? I hope you are able to get through some of the books you've been waiting for so long. I hate it when I have to return a book in the middle. Somehow it is better to return a book I never touched than one I'm not finished with yet!

Lea (leaspot) | 3635 comments February Month End Report

Books Read: 11 books this month and 26 so far this year. 9,074 pages.

Books from Filling in the Gaps: 22/100; 2020 Books 0/1, 2022 Books 1/11, 2023 Books 21/82

Books from 12+4 Challenge: 7/16

Previously Reviewed:

The Love Hypothesis
Bossypants
I'm Glad My Mom Died
Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human
The Winners

Recently finished:

The Maid - This is a mystery and thriller story about a maid named Molly who enters a hotel room to discover a dead body. I had some issues with the plot resolution on this book. As I get older, I find myself having less and less patience for characters who confuse revenge with justice. This felt like As Good As Dead to me. 1 STAR

Club Dead - This is the third book in the Sookie Stackhouse series, and in this book Sookie goes to Mississippi to rescue her former boyfriend. I did find this book entertaining, but the motives are incomprehensible to me. I definitely would not go out of my way to rescue any of my former boyfriends. 2 STARS

The Office BFFs: Tales of The Office from Two Best Friends Who Were There - I loved The Office TV series, but I didn't listen to the podcasts, so this book was really fun to listen to. I understand that it duplicates a lot of the information on the podcast, but I enjoyed some of the behind the scenes looks and have been watching some of the old episodes whenever I sit down for a moment or two. 3 STARS

Anne's House of Dreams - I'm not sure this book ages as well as some of the others in the series, but it was a very useful aid in helping me fall asleep some nights and it is such a comfort book for me. 4 STARS

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference - This nonfiction book was published in 2000, and it is about how certain ideas reach a point where they begin to spread like wildfire. While I don't agree with everything (the crime statistics was better explained by Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything in my opinion, and the teenage smoking discussion didn't sound convincing to me), I do love the way Mr. Gladwell's mind works and have very much enjoyed reading his work. 4 STARS

Lady Chatterley's Lover - So boring. The point of this book is that you aren't really living unless you have a physical aspect to your life. I think that's a little preachy. I also felt like the novel, which was banned for many years, was edgy in that there was language and a lot of talk about sex, but very conservative in that it still depicted the ideal man as dominant and aggressive and the ideal woman understood her role and accepted that. Accepted being lessor, not being appreciated for her thoughts and ideas. Just her body. Not my jam. And there was a quote in this book from the intellectual crowd (that were being depicted as buffoons)

"They all believed in the life of the mind. What you did apart from that was your private affair, and didn't much matter. No one thinks of inquiring of another person at what hour he retires to the privy. It isn't interesting to anyone but the person concerned."

And that's just how I felt about this book. Reading the minute details of other people's sex lives just isn't interesting to me. I was completely bored. 1 STAR

Currently reading:

Bad Gays: A Homosexual History - Just started.

The Priory of the Orange Tree - This book has been billed as The Hobbit for girls. So far, there have been no hobbits. But, it is a well written story about a world where there are dragons and wyverns and all sorts of crazy creatures in a world. I'm a little over 1/3 in and I'm very invested in the story.

Anne of Ingleside - The next book in the Anne of Green Gables series. A re-read.

Book of the month: The Winners
Worst book: Lady Chatterley's Lover
Biggest surprise: Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human - So much better than I was expecting. I guess it helps to have low expectations? :-)
Greatest accomplishment: I finished and loved the Beartown series. It was a long book, but it was so good.

I agree, it was so fun buddy reading the book with you. I tried my best not to spoil it for you. I mean the prologue basically told us what would happen, but I was in denial for the whole journey. Bill, I'm so glad you were pleasantly surprised with Lady Chatterley. I fully admit that I'm a moody reader, and maybe Lady Chatterley caught me in the wrong frame of mind to appreciate, but that's what makes it great to discuss books with everyone here...we all have different opinions. How boring it would be if we all thought the same thing. Have you read anything else by Lawrence? I haven't. I might try again after a long break and see if it was just me. Or it might be that Lawrence and I aren't compatible. :-)

Yes! I was disappointed. And believe me, I get that when a character is a bully and super awful, they need to have some sort of recompense...(view spoiler)

Yes, I really had a great February, despite reading two duds. (for me!) That's what I'm here for, to read the duds and save you from doing the same. Hmmm, I don't know if it works like that. You need at least 2 books to have a series, otherwise we can consider any stand alone as part of a maybe future series. With authors these days, we'd probably be right 50% of the time 🤣

So, it sounds like we're thinking that it is either 1) a series book or 2) a potential future series book.

If it is #1, once we've read it, it becomes a completed series since we've read all available books.

If it is #2, it isn't a series book, so it doesn't count as an incomplete series.

Either way, it doesn't count against me as an incomplete series. Am I splitting hairs yet?

We are masters of the art of completing series. Read one book, complete a series. Get happy and sad at the same time when the next book comes out. Rinse, repeat. :-)

Books from Filling in the Gaps: 25/100; 2020 Books 0/1, 2022 Books 2/11, 2023 Books 23/82

Books from 12+4 Challenge: 8/16

Recently finished:

Bad Gays: A Homosexual History - This was the history winner for the GRC Awards and I thought it was OK. I worried about two things before I picked it up, and I don't think I was wrong to worry, even though both are addressed by the authors. 1) It's super hard to know who was gay in history, since being attracted to someone who is the same sex as you is hard to "prove" if you don't want to be known as gay. And in historical times, sometimes you have to look at clues, since you can't look up anyone's Tinder or Grindr profile. 2) It's super hard to determine who was "bad" and who was "good" because we all have a different compass for what constitutes bad and good behavior. And people are typically more complex than just "gay," "straight," "good," and "bad." The author addressed these issues but did not really solve them to my satisfaction. I did learn some new things from reading this book, but I wasn't wowed by it. 2.5 stars.

The Space Between Worlds - A buddy read with Ioana and Alissa about a multiverse where travelers can travel between worlds as long as their counterpart is no longer alive. This debut novel has a top notch concept. Unfortunately, I tend to notice plot holes (Ioana and I had a nice chat about some of them on the buddy reads section), and there were some big ones here that I couldn't overlook. Overall, it was well paced and I enjoyed it and will probably read the sequel. 3 Stars.

Book Lovers - This was a buddy read with Lindsey and we both loved it. I was worried. It won the GRC Award for Best Romance and my average scores for GRC romance winners are the lowest, it is clearly my worst category. And Emily Henry and I have a bumpy past. I did enjoy Beach Read (3 stars), but was really unmoved by People We Meet on Vacation (2 stars). I hadn't planned to read this book until it won the award. That would have been a mistake. It's a story about a NYC literary agent who goes on vacation in a small town in North Carolina with her sister. Some things were surprising and some things were not, but what I really enjoyed was that the woman was portrayed as a sharp businesswoman and she did not give all of that up. I'm eager to read the next book by Ms. Henry that is coming out next month. 4 stars.

Currently reading:

The Priory of the Orange Tree- I had to return this book to the library 44% of the way through. I hope it returns soon. I'm impatient to continue.

Blade Runner 3: Replicant Night - I checked this book out instead, and I do not love it. In fact, I'm 57% of the way through the book and if it does not get any better, I intend to abandon Book 4 in the series. This might be the first time I've abandoned a book on my Individual Challenge, but I don't want to read something that isn't interesting to me, even if it would finish a series for me and cross something off a list. My time is worth more.

Anne of Ingleside - I'm making a little more progress. Aunt Mary Maria is a doozy.

Wayward - I'm 79% of the way through this book. It is the sequel to Wanderers, a Stephen King-esque type novel that Alissa and I buddy read in December/January about a global pandemic. This sequel is about the aftermath. I'm enjoying it, maybe not quite as much as the first book, but close. It just is such a long book (over 800 pages, 34 hours) that it is taking a long time to finish.

Alondra, I think you will love both Wanderers and Wayward whenever you get to them.

Right now, my favorite character in Wayward (Book #2) is Gumball, a golden retriever, who is a Very Good Dog. :-)

You are reading some BIG books. Good on ya. I think I've gone the other way. LOL. I guess you can say you finished a series even if you gave up on the last book. Don't keep reading just to get to the end if it's not enjoyable. I've been learning that of late.

Good luck with the rest of March.

Ioana | 2122 comments I agree with Bill, a book that's not enjoyable can/should be abandoned. Life is too short and there are too many good books out there waiting...

Hopefully The Priory of the Orange Tree will return soon.

It sounds like my kind of book. Right now, I need to NOT buy anything else for a while. 🤔😬

I am actually considering getting rid of some books, because I am starting to double-stack my shelves again. I just don't have room for another bookshelf! 😩🤦🏾

Book Lovers - 4 stars.

Read both of these books and liked Book Lovers (3.5 stars) but really loved The Space Between Worlds (5 stars). I'm going to have to go and see to the Buddy Chat and see your discussions. Think I was more willing to let things slide because I fell in love with the concept. Like I always say, I'm an emotional reader, lol

Overall, sounds like a good half of the month.

Thanks, I'm learning that as well. I will finish the book since I've just got a few chapters to go, and then I will assess whether I want to read the last book in the series. If I didn't like this one and the reviews for the next one are worse, there's a good chance that I should just abandon the series and move along.

Good luck with the rest of March for you too!!
