Daisy X Machina (daisyxmachina) | 8 comments I'm going crazy trying to remember an SF book which I think was written in the 90's about cities in alternate dimensions where you can somehow travel between them. I believe there was some inspector at the heart of it and an uneasy truce between them. And I think there may be alien sentient stones involved.

It is mandatory to include genre and plot details in your topic header, as per the Group Rules.

Because this group is so huge, we will close threads that don't adhere to this requirement.

Please add more plot details to your topic header from what you've already written.

Booktube, I copied plot details to the header/ topic title. Feel free to edit it.

Can you tell us more about the inspector - job? home? main character?

How are the alternate dimensions/ cities different? Why do people travel between these dimensions?

Robert (ricroscupshigh) | 540 comments A Darker Shade of Magic 3 books set: Darker Shade of Magic / A Gathering of Shadows / A Conjuring of Light, by V.E. Schwab?

"Schwab isn’t content to imagine just one alternate London—she imagines four, interconnected yet vastly different. There’s Grey London, much like our own, and lacking magic. There’s Red London, simply soaked in magic and much more fun—and much more dangerous. There’s White London, which has been broken by magic, its lifeforce seeping away ever faster each day. And then there’s Black London—but it’s best not to speak too much about Black London. How these Other Londons are related to each other in this complex, briskly-plotted trilogy is one of the great pleasures of reading it."

Google Books preview of A Darker Shade of Magic (etc.) by V.E. Schwab - Robert's suggestion:

https://books.google.com/books?id=spg... There are different cover images.

Robert | 173 comments It was published much later, but The City & the City also involves parallel cities and an inspector.

Booktube, around what year did you read this book? A range of years is fine.
