TheClumsyFellow | 4 comments I do apologize if I'm listing this wrong or if my topic isn't specific enough.

I'm searching for a book that I read around 2013 to 2017. It was written mainly for teens and maybe really young young adults. The Cover looked like a mix between Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3) (the green one), the black mage covers and The Novice second book by Trudi Canavan. A girl wearing a cloak and some kind of magic runes and forest in the background.

Therer were around 5 books in the series as far as i remember. The title of the book was only one word: the name of the girl, but her name was awfully difficult to remember, it was sth like Maehdid, Maerid. I'm pretty sure it started with M and was a bit longer (and looked complicated enough). I think it also had some kind of subtitle "the magic novice" or sth.

I think she didn't know she had magic in the beginning but discovered it in the first book. She was some kind of slave and/or had a very difficult life beforehand. There was a magic instructor with whom she falls in love with later on (but its really slowburn and only happened after 3 books i think). For some reason they have to travel the world and her powers had some kind of connections to music and a harp and I think she had a brother.

Don't ask me why, but I do remember a specific scene: They had travelled for several days and finally arrived at some kind of castle where she could finally rest. But there was blood in her bed the next day and a woman who worked as her maid explained to her it was her period and that she only got it now cuz her body thought it could finally relax and that she ate more than before etc..

As far as i remember she got way more powerful from book to book and it felt like they were busy travelling 90% of all 5 books.

I hope the small bits i remembered are of any help and i do apologize for my grammar mistakes etc. as english isn't my native language. (That might also be a problem, I read the book in german back then and I do not know if it was even translated to english or if it was translated from english to german in the first place)

Ky | 460 comments "Maerid" seems rather close to "Mairead/Máiréad", which is the Irish version of "Margaret." Scottish equivalent: "Maighread"

Would you say the fantasy world had an Irish or Celtic flavor? Could your protagonist's name be one of these names above? It might be easier to search if we get a lock on the exact spelling of the name.

TheClumsyFellow | 4 comments Thank you so much for your comment! I'm really happy haha!
As far as I remember, it definitely was a different world to ours. The cities had "weird" names as well, but she was mostly travelling through regions that had a lot of green in them (so the comparison to ireland isn't too far fetched I think).

Máiréad and Maighread seem so damn close, but I looked them both up and couldn't find it so I guess it is something slightly different.

For some reason I think the name of her companion (the older magic teacher) was something along the lines of "Cadvan" but i'm afraid i'm mixing it up with Trudi Canvan, so take that input with a grain of salt lol

Ky | 460 comments Here's a link with a bunch of fantasy names beginning with "M":

They seem to be a mix of male and female names but maybe something will jog your memory.

Eugene Kuznetsov | 54 comments It's "The Books of Pellinor".

The Naming

The girl is named Maerad, the teacher is Cadvan. The bleeding episode is on page 98 of book 1.

Hannah | 47 comments This^ is exactly what I thought of as well. She's a slave at the very start of the first book.

TheClumsyFellow | 4 comments OMG YESSSS! YOU ARE RIGHT! I can't believe it! <3 <3 <3 THANK YOU SO MUCH! I wish I could gift you points, thumbs up or stars on goodread or something haha! Apparently the cover of the 3rd book looks like the one I had in memory, when I described it :D I'm so happy, now I can reread it! It's amazing that you figured it out from the bits I remembered, thank you so much! I'm just slightly confused, this book seems to be rather unpopular, I've never heard it's title when I was searching for the top 200 newer fantasy books haha

TheClumsyFellow | 4 comments Yes haha! Big thanks to you too! I'm so happy, that the book was found! I thought it was too unpopular, thank you, thank you, thank you! <3
