What Else Are You Reading - March 2015

The Goblin Emperor got me into the mood for good fantasy, so I decided to dive into Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders trilogy. I just finished Ship of Magic a couple days ago and have now moved on to The Mad Ship. Not sure I like it as well as the Farseer trilogy, but it's certainly interesting. I've never read anything quite like it before.

I adored Liveship Traders. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

I really liked Farseer, but I like Liveship better. Especially Mad Ship. But then I like Tawny Man better than both.

I am currently reading 2 books. The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, both by George R.R. Martin. I am also listening to 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup in audiobook form, read by Louis Gossett Jr., on the drive to and from work.

I'm starting The Butterfly Mosque: A Young American Woman's Journey to Love and Islam by G. Willow Wilson. She's at the conference I'm going to next week and this book was picked for a "book club" of sorts. She of course is the author of Alif the Unseen and Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal, but this book is a memoir.

Finished A Blink of the Screen: Collected Short Fiction -- if you like Pratchett, and Granny Weatherwax in particular, you really need this collection so that you can read "The Sea and Little Fishes", if nothing else -- and started something dramatically different in tone: The Barrow by Mark Smylie.

Re-reading Mystic and Rider by Sharon Shinn, and Seer of Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier.

First I finally tried out the audio of The Fellowship of the Ring. I didn't bother with much of a review, but put down some thoughts about what that book has meant to me. (My Review)

Next up was An Unwelcome Quest, which is another great entry in a really fun series, especially in audio. The audio is read by the ever excellent Luke Daniels!

Finally in honor of Mr. Pratchett's passing, I finally gave Discworld a second try with The Light Fantastic and enjoyed it a lot more than The Color of Magic. I jumped right into Equal Rites and will probably keep on with the series until I've caught up.

I may have to pace myself as I seem to be reading them quickly and there will sadly only be more released. (My Review)

Yesterday I finished Dauntless by Jack Campbell. Good old fashioned naval space opera.
Take 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' and put him in charge of the Battlestar Galactica fleet. That's it in a nutshell. Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would:)

I just finished The Dragon's Path and finally finished Saga, Volume 1. Loved both. I am about 50% done with Deadhouse Gates which i was doing just in print but decided to do in audio as well. Going to start either The Color of Magic or The Rebirths of Tao in audio for the gym since Deadhouse Gates requires too much focus for anything other than autopilot on my commute.

I finished Duty and Desire yesterday, and am now reading the final book in the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman series, These Three Remain.

Finished Golden Fool today and must immediately read Fool's Fate. It is the year of Robin Hobb for me. I can't get enough of her world.

I always love it when new people get hooked on Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings. Fitz, the Fool, the dragons, the liveships, the depth of history she evokes with her worldbuilding without drowning you in details just make it all so great.

It is. I read Farseer a couple years ago and was angry at the ending so I quit Hobb for a while. Read Liveship last month and I've been hooked ever since.

Finally found time to finish In the Night Garden. Very pretty book but it never grabbed me on an emotional level. Now taking a stab at a genuine literary classic, which are things I have kind of a mixed history on: Titus Groan.

Just finished The Shining Ones by David Eddings. While I loved the Belgariad series, his later books are not quite up to that level. This one had too much tell and not enough show.

My discworld read continues on with Equal Rites, which I enjoyed almost as much as The Light Fantastic, albeit for mostly different reasons. I'm on a good pace to easily get to Wyrd Sisters before the end of April for the group read. (My Review)

Now I'm reading Shadow Study.

Started The Time Traveler's Wife and read a lot more than expected this weekend. Couldn't find my copy of Guards! Guards! on any of my bookshelves so next weekend I plan an expedition to the archives in the garage :)
Having read Wyrd Sisters, I thought I would read a different Pratchett.

Finished The Barrow, which was excellent, albeit dark and not for the squeamish, and am starting Reanimators by Pete Rawlik, a play on Lovecraft which I suspect will also be dark and not for the squeamish.
