I read it in 2007. It's a YA fantasy novel in present day, where three friends find something in a cave that gives them super powers. When they use their powers, they manifest as glowing golden vests. There are also villains with corrupted powers and gray vests. All I remember is they are taken to a good guy training camp where the leader has the power of creation to train, but then the villains attack and kill lots of the golden vest wearers and the leader. The three heroes escape to fight another day.
