Quotes from the book:
- The very sound of the name Matilda had sent a chill of pure terror through him. Why?
- "... be forced to turn you over to Matilda for futher treatments."
- "Matilda did something to his memory. I'm Ginny Rhodes. Jan and I were kidnapped because, well, because of certain abilities we have."
- The big man turned, stepped to a curtain stretched over a frame and flung it aside. At the sight of the black coffin-like box upended at an angle in the midst..."
The story is of a (singular / or group of) scientist(s) who is experimenting on a group of children trying to induce psychic or similar powers in them.
The story's main character is young male.
There was some sort of chamber or container that they were placed into to induce/trigger their powers. At some point, the the main character fights being put into the chamber.
The chamber _may_ have been called Matilda.
The chamber _may_ have also been affecting their memories or it might have been some sort of medication that they were being given
The story eventually reveals they are somewhere in an forested area., as the kids group together and try to escape.
I believe the cover of the paperback had what looked like an old-fashioned coffin, standing upright, with purple or red interior and metal orbs/electrodes on the corners (like in the original Frankenstein movie lab)
