I liked the first Well of Souls book, but didn't get past that one. Although there was another series by Chalker that I enjoyed, if you can find it, it starts with: The River of Dancing Gods

There is no Kindle version, but the used copies of the paperback don't seem too out of range.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and sequels by Becky Chambers
Some in the different Star Trek series
And somewhat in the Expendable series.
That's just from what I've read in the last few months. Follow me for more. ;)

C.J. Cherryh's Alliance-Union books definitely have different species - see here for a listing of them:

Rats! I've read Mercy long ago. Any more suggestions ?

You could try Robyn Peterman
The first book in the series is It's A Wonderful Midlife Crisis
Not as much depth as Sookie Stackhouse series, but similar main character vibes and hilarious at times.
