Native American Child Returns Home But Everyone Is Gone

Searching for book title I read in elementary school. Juvenile fiction.? United States. Hi! I am looking for the title of a book or short story I read between second and fifth grade, sometime between 1991-1995 Please forgive me, the plot details in my memory are vague, it was the ending that stuck with me. The story was about a young Native American youth that left home to live with white settlers. At some point this young person at leaves the tribe's home to live in a town/city. I cannot remember how much time passes between leaving and returning back home. At the end he feels a need or desire to return home with their tribe but it is too late. The tribe cannot be found, he is not sure what happened to everyone. The main character is devastated. Please help!

Just ahead was the clearing he knew so well. He could hear the river that ran by the clearing.
He began to run. He ran out into the clearing, and there he stopped.
The village was gone.
He looked all about him. He went to the place where his house had been. Among the weeds and grass he found an old broken bowl. That was all.
What had happened to the village? Where were his people? Why had they gone away?
