This was a book that I read in middle school I think, so mid-2000s. I remember that it was about a family with at least two children moving to a wooded area where the trees' sap could be turning into syrup. There was a part where someone was sent to check on the kids because they had not gone to school for some time and the parents explained that this was because something went wrong with the syrup process and the kids needed to stay home to make up for lost time. Then a bunch of volunteers show up and help them finish. It was probably published much earlier than 2000s - if I had to guess I would say 50-70s.
