Vivian | 2 comments *Spoilers* kids/YA novel, read around 2017/2018 main character has mind powers that they learn to use in a secret society, that helps kids who reach 12 years old and get this power use their power for good.

I don't remember how the book starts (the main character, a boy, is just a normal kid, and turns 12 years old), but near the middle of the book, the character starts off in a virtual reality setting, where he and a group of kids are told to control the flames of candles with their minds, having personalized virtual assistant AIs. This is in a specific institution-like school, where they learn about their powers. They're special because not all 12 year olds possess this power, and the ones who do lose it at 13 years old.

It's like a mind power where they go into someone's mind through a "door", and everyone has the same parts of a brain, but organize it according to how their personalities are? All of the people's brains are in "streets" and houses that contain file folders that contain memories. They practice this power and go in each other's minds and roam their streets. I think they can also use this to levitate objects or crush them, but it only comes with an enormous about of practice.

They're trained go against this woman (villain of the story) who used to have the power that they have now and was very powerful (think Voldemort or Darth Vader type), her name is like "Anna" or "Ann", and she's mad because she used her power wrong or something, and got kicked out of the institute that they're currently studying, in an intense scene with her on a boat in the sea at night being forced to leave from the school or leaving on her own? Now an adult, she adopted a pair of twin boys that are also 12 and taught them how to use their powers from what she remembered. They use it to study really quick by flipping through the pages of a book, and immediately reading that entire book in seconds.

Towards the end of the book, they capture the woman and put her in a prison of some sort, and the main character is told to try to go into her mind to see what's in there or find something? She starts humming "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", which makes it very hard to enter the door in her mind, and basically blocks the main character from going onto the street of her mind. I forget what happens next.

At the end, *SPOILERS*, the main character is on the night before his 13th birthday (he'll lose the gift the next day), and practices going into his own brain by looking in the mirror (they use their gifts by looking at someone's forehead and then going in somehow), and goes into his own brain. With hours left, he finds a grey concrete or something filling his streets, so he uses his powers to get rid of the concrete. Finally, after hours, the concrete finally stops coming, and he gets out and leaves, thinking that he's going to get it for the last time.

The next morning, his mom surprises him with balloons in the kitchen, and he realizes that he can still use his powers, and asks his mom if he was actually born on that day, which she confirms. This is where the book ends.
