A witch with a garden refuses to help men turn into heroes but helps a girl

It's probably a Terry Pratchett novel, it had that style--funny fantasy, you know. I listened to an audiobook sample and didn't save it, unfortunately. Can't recall whether the narrator's voice was more masculine or feminine in timbre. There's an old witch who potters in her garden, and she's a bit cranky. The story describes her frustration with callow men who want her help to become "heroes", enchanting swords and whatnot, and she hates being bothered with them. Then a girl comes to her for help, I think running from someone.
