Final Heir (Jane Yellowrock, #15) by Faith Hunter

Title/Author:
Final Heir by Faith Hunter
Series: Jane Yellowrock #15
Date Read: 10/19/2022
Shelf: Witch(es) ~ Shelved as "witches" 7x
Pages: 384 pages

Review: This is the final book in the Yellowrock series and is very bittersweet since this is one of my all time favorites series... I am going to try to review with the least amount of spoilery as possible, but it will be a little lengthy. I think all books have been leading up to this final battle for power. There have been some really good highs and some very lows for Jane over the years and we have been right there with her. Some of those lows really made my heart hurt, but then you remember it's just fiction. FH has done a great job at building this world of mithrans (vampires), witches, were creatures, skinwalkers, angels and various otherworld creatures. She grew up in the Louisiana bayou region and it really comes through in her details of New Orleans. From Beast's hunting trips into the muck to a lazy rainy day, you know the smells, the air, and the food... So NO is the place for the final showdown for ultimate power.

The Good: We have so many characters that have crossed the pages over the years and several are interwoven back into this final tale. Jane's people. Bruiser, he's good mate. Edmund. Her brothers Ely and Alex. Even Leo Pellissier. Then Angie baby is always a highlight even if it's a little scary at times. My hope is that she is the spinoff so we can still visit this world at a later time. The Bad: So many mini attacks leading up to the big day. Not a fan of all the running around and running around and still running around but not really accomplishing much. Sometimes Jane in her new role isn't really front and center to the action as usual. She is more protected but somehow still manages to get hurt, a lot.

I have been reading this series for over 10 years and not sure if I am ready to let it go just yet. I listened to the finale in audio and it didn't disappoint. I guess that I/We are happy too!!

Storm Cursed (Mercy Thompson, #11) by Patricia Briggs

Title/Author: Storm Cursed - Patricia Briggs
Series: Mercy Thompson, #11
Date Read: 10/22/2022
Shelf: #88 on the Witch list https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Pages: 368 pages
Rating: ★★★★★

Review: Things have changed around the Tri-Cities since Mercy took responsibility for the safety of citizens in Pack territory. Some evil characters think this means they will be safe from human law and try to set up house there. The big plots in this volume deal with a group of black witches moving in and wanting to take control and a major US Government and Fae meeting being set up to talk about how they will deal with each other. More background comes out about some of the major characters, Wulfe shows up, and Coyote throws in a scene or two. And of course there is lots of bloodshed and a bit of humor before it is all over. Another great addition to the series.

I was planning to go with Moonlight and Magic #4 in her Betwixt and Between series. Haunted / Magical house. Audio release is this Tuesday. Problem is I cannot find a word count. Seems like audio is dropping before the book. So I’m going to keep looking for an alternative just in case.

Potions and Pastries (A Magical Bakery Mystery, #7) by Bailey Cates

Review

I don't know the reason, but I don't connect with this series. I like paranormal coziies but, in this case, it feels bland, and too far-fetched (even in a paranormal one). Furthermore, the search of the house, sorry, doesn't fly. The end (last quarter of the book) redems it a bit, and that's the reason of the 3, but this book has reminded me why this series is in the back burner, when I've finished other ones.

Devouring Darkness (Heirs of Chicagoland, #4) by Chloe Neill

Title/Author:
Devouring Darkness by Chloe Neill
Series: Heirs of Chicagoland #4

Shelf: Haunted/Magical House

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Review: This is the 4th book in the spinoff Heirs series to Chicagoland. It follows the children of several of the main cast members in the original version. Being that most are supernaturals, they are still around for many years to come as supporting cast. Main focus is Elisa Sullivan, the only child ever born to Vampires and raised in Cadogan house. Connor the pack prince and future Apex, her BFF Lulu a witch, and colleagues from her Ombudsman office are all chasing around another big dark entity trying to destroy Chicago and her family home. The good: Always nice being back in the Chicagoland universe and continuing to see how the family and friends evolve with the next generation. Watching the heirs come into their own powers and dealing with their own obstacles. The not so good: Drug a little in the beginning to middle, lots of chase and miss repetition. At times it felt a bit like Merit and Mallory 2.0, rinse and repeat. Would like to see these heirs have their own identity and less redundancy of the old storyline patterns. I listened to this in audio and it was a solid listen.

Title/Author: If Walls Could Talk by Juliet Blackwell
Series: A Haunted Home Renovation Mystery, #1
Date Read: 10/28/2022

Review: A very good mystery featuring Melanie Turner, a historic home renovator who is talking to a friend Matt Addax, a former rock star, about doing a renovation for him when his partner, Kenneth, enters the room with a bloody arm missing a hand and a stomach pumped full of nails from a nail gun and collapses. Matt is taken in for questioning and held. Melanie tries to help him by trying to figure out what happened. And Kenneth comes back as a clueless ghost that is really not much help. After reading a string of cozies with buttinsky type MCs who have no right to get involved in solving mysteries and are annoying, it was refreshing to follow someone who had a logical approach and reason for asking questions. She was doing research on the house and much of the questioning arose from that. Her personal life also had depth. Looking forward to more in this series.

Be My Ghost (A Haunted Haven Mystery #1) by Carol J. Perry

Review

This was a new series for me, and it wasn't really in my radar till this theme. Thank you! I've enjoyed a lot the book, though it's a first book (sorry, a pet peeve of mine). It's funny, fast-paced, not so "do-goodie" thatt I don't dislike the MC. Not trying to be perky, strange or whatever, just a normal person in a tough spot (not so tough), but not a lot of cry over the past. So, I definitely will keep on reading this series (the second one is already on-hold at the library ;) )

Review

Sorry, not my cup of tea. Nalini writes very well and the last part of the book redeems a bit the story, but I don't like stories about toxic loves, and this is one from my POV. The story after the Cascade is advancing, and I look forward to the other books to see if my friend's guest or mine are right ;) , but I don't think I'll be back to this book. I've read Titus and Sharine's story after this, just to remember a book I like a lot in the series.

Review: The fifteenth book in the Guild Hunter series follows the epic love story between Archangel Alexander (Persia) and Archangel Zanaya (Queen of the Nile). So this one was a bit of a doozy... We go way way back to the beginning of time or maybe not that far back just THOUSANDS of years, but it took half the book to get back to the present day. They loved deeply but were never able to get on the same page and then went into the deep sleep of angels. Along comes the Cascade and both are awakened to deal with evil that I refuse to name. The good: Very detailed journey into the deep past. We even had a view of other archangels that are now ancient from a different perspective of when they were younger and before they became archangels. I didn't notice as many long descriptive dialogues for eyes, hair, wings, etc. They seemed to be scaled back and minimized in this book, or fit the narrative better. The Not So Good: It. Was. So. Long... I struggled in the beginning as angels were mentioned and I battled with am I supposed to know this one, were they introduced in another book, what's their super power, who are they related to. I finally had to just listen and go with the flow hoping that if it was important it would be provided. I am so over "she who will not be named" in my reviews. I refuse to give her any more time and want her out of all future storylines. Come up with another big bad and let the whole reborn storyline go. I listened to this in audio and they are always well done.

Book: Play of Passion - Nalini Singh
Series: A Psy-Changeling Novel, #9
Pages: 321
How it fits: #85 on the list
Rating: ★★★★
Read: 11/4/22

Review: Lt Indigo Riviere, highest ranking dominant female in the SnowDancer Pack and Drew Kincaid, dominant tracker, outside the hierarchy of the Pack are the main romantic couple in this book. His age, 4 years younger than her and his lower level of dominance are major problems for Indigo, who has seen how this difference can wreck a relationship. As they sort this out we also see alpha, Hawke's struggles with his attraction to very young, Sienna. The action part of the story involves the continuing factioning of the Psy Council over Silence and the power struggle. New alliances within the Psy, changeling, and human are developing and everyone is on the brink of war. The next volume could be a very violent one. One major thing I like about this series is the level of angst put into getting the problems of a relationship settled by about midway through the book and the level of support and connection that they then can devote to the plot problems as a team.

Review

I like this series, and I like the MC, but this time, I don't know, too many "sore spots", too many "dumb decisions" that lead to fights and hurt. I don't know, even fights are solved fast, it looks like the MC aremaking wrong decision all the time and only make good ones when they fight. In any case, the book was overall entertaining, and I will keep on reading the series.

Review: Straif Blackthorne has been on a quest to find a cure for his weak family gene that is susceptible to a fatal virus. It has taken the rest of his blood family. He does not want to pass it along to his children. His return to the family estate and its neglect has made him determined to fix it up and then return to his quest. But a challenge for the estate due to its condition has led him to hire interior designer Mitchella Clover and fight to keep control. When they become attracted to each other another kind of angst occurs. Mitchella is sterile due to a childhood illness and Straif is bent on a blood family. This was an OK entry in the series but a bit too focused on one issue.

Review: This is next book in the Cat & Bones spinoff series that follows master vampire Ian. He's in search of what he can remember of Veritas. But Veritas is actually his wife and has been involved in some memory manipulation in order to save Ian's life while covertly protecting him from demons and the Law Guardians. She also has some secrets of her own she is not ready to share... Guess that is expected of someone that has been around for over 4000 years.

The good: Like Ian's tenacity and willing to fight for what he wants, whether he remembers how important it is or not. He can be a trickster & manipulator. Find it humorous. He was always a character I liked from the Cat & Bones series. Always like getting a little bit of the characters from the previous series. The not so good: There was a lot of crazy happening as we dug deeper into Veritas and her back story. She like all JF characters has been deeply tortured in her past and has issues.

To be fair... Its been over three years since I last spent time in this word and I have just lost that loving feeling for these series. I loved the initial Cat & Bones books... But somewhere I lost the desire to read on release date and I visit every once in awhile to see if that spark is back again. Unfortunately not yet... Listened in audio and maybe its the narrator, everything seemed just a little overly dramatic in delivery. I still have another book left in the Cat series that I haven't finished. I guess that's what bingo is for... :)

A Bodkin for the Bride (Wisteria Tearoom Mysteries #4) by Patrice Greenwood

Review

I like this series but I don't read it a lot as there is like a cloud of melancholy over it (my POV) that gives me the blues even if I like it. I like how she tries to investigate the murder of her resident ghost, and how she is opening to believe that there is more than you can see, although I'm not very fond of her relationship (too much angst, too much prejudice). It's nice for me to see some traditional Latin customs (some of them Spanish) in the books as it's set in Santa Fe, mixed with the British ambiance of her tearoom. I'll keep on reading the series but with some distance between books, not a binge reading.
