book setting is in the countryside, main character is a girl who lives with her farming family. the father really hates her because she's kinda small and skinny --> not much use in farming. he calls her names, something like swine or pig related. she may be the swine herder of the family. part where she's trying to climb a tree but realizes that she's maturing and her breasts are getting in the way. there's this group of boys in the village who mistreat her. one day, a group of them surround her and the leader takes off his belt to whip her i think. after that, she has bruises and runs away into the woods with a basket of bread. i think a boy gave her the bread not sure. she may have joined the circus afterwards. there were likely fantasy elements in the circus part, if i'm not confusing two+ books again... i read this in ~ 2014-2017. thanks for the help!

Do you think the book was meant for kids, teens, or adults?
i would say teens, probably 11-14 years old!
thanks for the list! the synopsis for rain village does look almost right, but iirc the writing is more formal. there's also no friendly figure like Mary that i remember.
