I happen to be watching the PBS series "Around the World in Eighty Days". It's a great series. I think he meant to leave the book and she got the message he meant her to get. I think he reconsidered what that message conveyed to Cassandra and actually was curious about the book and her other suggestions. It showed that he was starting to take her seriously as a person.
I agree. Tom left the book because he didn't want to get involved with Cassandra. He was afraid and wanted her to know he would not be around to discuss books or anything else.Once he couldn't forget Cassandra like every other woman in his life, he started to read the books she recommended. He knew there was a message for him in the stories.
I feel the same as you two. Tom meant to convey that message by leaving the book behind but his curiosity about Cassandra got the better of him. Reading the book gave him insight into her and then he got interested in the book, period.
