Team Beet, it's time to fill those cornucopias with our autumn harvest!

You will work to fill each cornucopia using the prompts provided. You can read to fill them in any order you'd like, and you can refill the same ones multiple times.

Each book read may only be used for one prompt per team challenge. Don't forget about your acorns! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 15 hours of audio listed to).

ACORNS

- Earn an acorn for every 1000 pages read as a team.
- Earn an acorn for every 15 hours of audio listened to.

Note: Acorns must be accrued to fill the cornucopias. Once you complete a cornucopia, those acorns should not be used on future cornucopias.

CORNUCOPIA #1

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book with a majority orange cover
- A book that is 400+ pages
- A book featuring an animal in the story
- A book that was published in the fall (September, October, or November)

CORNUCOPIA #2

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A dystopian novel
- A book with a majority red cover
- A book with a person's first name in the title
- A book set in or about nature (forest, camping, environmental literature, etc.)

CORNUCOPIA #3

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book set in a school
- A book featuring a ghost
- A book with a black and white cover
- A book by an author who is not alive anymore

CORNUCOPIA #4

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book set in the 1900s
- A book about family dynamics
- A book with a majority yellow cover
- A magical realism novel

CORNUCOPIA #5

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A mystery or thriller
- A book that features sports
- A book with an item of food on the cover
- A young adult novel

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Hello team! I went ahead and added my name to the spreadsheet with the books I have in progress and what I plan to read next. Unfortunately the book I have to read for book club next week doesn't fit any of the prompts (unless an animal or a ghost pops up but I doubt it lol) but I can still use it for acorns.

I like the change that you have to earn acorns to complete a cornucopia, nice little additional challenge.

Editing to add steps to add your book to the Complete tab in a way that will use the snazzy formulas that Mahi created.

1. In the Complete tab, enter your name and the name of the book in the first available column. You could also copy just those two cells from the Plans tab and paste them. Do not copy and paste the entire column as this will remove the formula from row 4.
2. Also in the Complete tab, put an X in the cell for all prompts it fits.
3. In the corresponding Cornucopia tab for the prompt you're using the book for, select the dropdown. Your book should be in the list, along with the other books already used for the prompt. Select your book.
4. In the Complete tab, the Used for Prompt field is automagically filled in, and the select cell is highlighted in green.
5. Delete your column from the Plans tab.

Amy (Other Amy) | 719 comments Hello, all. I have been perusing my shelves. I can't access the spreadsheet at the moment (because of the computer I'm on, not because there's anything wrong with my access), so I'll just put a note here one what I've got going on.

Must read this week due to other commitments:
Nettle & Bone (fits animal in story, and probably family dynamics and set in nature, but we'll see)
The Dark Is Rising (Set in the 1900s and I believe natural setting. Possibly YA? The line between middle grade and YA is always hazy for me.)

Beyond that, I'll be able to read one or two more. I have a lot of choices on my list right now that fit several prompts, so I can be flexible depending on what still needs to be filled when I get through those two.

Emma R. | 79 comments Hi all! I'm one of your captains. This is my first time captaining but I've done a number of readathons before. Let me know if I can be of any help.

I'm finishing up a few long-term reading challenges, so those books will be my focus but I'll see what I can fit them.

I also like the acorn addition, it adds a little more reward for just reading/listening to a book

message 5: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Hello all!! I'm out of town next Wednesday-Friday so will be slow going those few days, but I'm a fast reader in general so will get in as many books before and after that as possible (and I can't really go a day without reading, so will still be reading while I'm gone lol). I'll go through and fill in what I know I need to get read this week!

Happy reading all!! :)

message 6: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I just got added to team beet and am excited to read with you all! I also like that the acorns are used towards the cornucopias.

I'm finishing up a family visit so don't anticipate reading a lot this weekend but have a flight on Monday that will get me some good reading time. I have 3 books I've started and will put those in the spreadsheet.

message 7: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2921 comments Hi team,

I’m pretty much starting all new books so I will see if any work or try and pick some new ones. It is going to be a peer busy week so who knows how much actually reading I will be able to read

message 8: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments Hi Team Beet! I have been a little slump but hopefully this read-a-thon kicks me into high speed. I put a few books I have checked out of the library on the spreadsheet. I will start one of them in the morning.

Hope everyone has a great week of reading!

message 9: by Alicia (last edited Sep 09, 2022 08:36PM) (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments Beets are one of my favorite vegetables! What good fortune!

I'm hoping to get through at least 4 books this week, but hopefully more. I'm going to do 3 novellas, so that should help move things along. If I could just find categories for them. I'm also half way done with the Firekeeper's Daughter so definitely more than 100 pages left on that.

That said my books don't seem to fit a lot of the prompts. Eek. I'll keep looking and may be adding an extra one or two to the plan just to be safe. I can choose them based on where we're at in the week.

For anyone that has read Firekeeper's Daughter do you think it counts for "family dynamics"?

message 10: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 95 comments Hi everyone! I'm one of your captains - this is my first time doing this but I'll do my best :)

Excited to see how the challenge goes!

message 11: by Mahi (last edited Sep 09, 2022 10:42PM) (new)

Mahi | 95 comments I added some of the books I had planned to read next week to the plans sheet. Sadly mine don't seem to fit many prompts either (fantasy doesn't seem to work well) but I'll look for better books.

I also added some formula to the sheet to give us a dropdown with completed books that fit a prompt when making the cornucopias.

message 12: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 95 comments We have at least one planned book that fits each prompt!

Prompts with only one:
- A book with a majority orange cover
- A book featuring a ghost
- A book with a majority yellow cover
- A book with an item of food on the cover

message 13: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2921 comments I will be able to cover food item on the cover. I mainly have cozy mysteries planned.

message 14: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments I will try to get a copy of Bliss Montage by Ling Ma when it comes out Tuesday.

Does this seem like it is mostly yellow?
Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins

message 15: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 95 comments Definitely!

message 16: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I'm finishing off Ella Enchanted this morning and should be done pretty soon.

I'm doing another readathon today that has about 7 hours left so I'm hoping to finish at least one... Maybe two more of my in progress reads this afternoon! Allergies have me under the weather but it's making for good reading time as a silver lining!

message 17: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2921 comments I should finish Haunted in Little Leaf Creek (Little Leaf Creek #9) by Cindy Bell Haunted in Little Leaf Creek by Cindy Bell today and it will work for food on the cover.

I also need to read my library book Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt this week. I really have no idea what the book is about so I have only marked it as featuring an animal.

I have 3 cozy mystery audiobooks going so once I figure out which one I'm likly to finish first I will update the spreadsheet.

I have 2 books next in line at the library with ghosts so hopefully one of them becomes available this week.

message 20: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I finished Ella Enchanted and put it in for first name and highlighted that box on the completed tab just to show where I slotted it in.

message 21: by Mahi (last edited Sep 10, 2022 10:49AM) (new)

Mahi | 95 comments Yay first book

That seems very useful! I'm going to try to write a formula that does it automatically.

Edit: done!

message 22: by Nancy (last edited Sep 10, 2022 01:19PM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I finished Lab Girl and put it under the only prompt it fits.

I will finish Carrie Soto Is Back at some point this afternoon, after I fold some laundry.

message 23: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments And I finished Carrie and put it under about sports.

It will be another couple of days before I finish anything else that will fit a prompt.

message 24: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I finished up Assassin's Fate and put it in for Animal.

message 25: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments Wow you all are doing so well getting books finished up. I started on Acts of Violet and I Told You This Would Happen today but will probably not finish either for a day or two.

I was able to get a copy of Reckless Girls with its yellow cover from the library so will start that in a few days.

message 26: by Alicia (last edited Sep 10, 2022 07:37PM) (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments Hey Beets!

Just finished Firekeeper's Daughter which can fit for 400+ pages, about sports, YA, mystery/thriller, sports or family dynamics. Is there any team preference where I put it?

I also finished Under One Roof. It's a romance, but the heroine is an environmental engineer and talks about climate change and the environment often, so I put it under about nature.

message 27: by Emma R. (new)

Emma R. | 79 comments Hi all,

I'm reading four different books right now but I'm jumping back and forth between them, so I'm not sure when I will finish them.

I am reading Soul Taken by Patricia Briggs which has a ghost and that is the only prompt it fits, so I have that covered

message 28: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I didn't finish anything today, but read more than expected since I spent most of the day with my parents instead of my niece and nephew.

Nice progress on cornucopias and nice to see we have our first acorn!

message 29: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2921 comments Today ended up busier than I expected so not as reading as I hoped. I’ll update the spreadsheet tomorrow.

message 30: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments Great job team! I just finished Stuck with You. It doesn't fit any prompts, but gives us some hours towards acorns.

message 31: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Happy Sunday all! My crashing out on the sofa all day worked well for reading lots of pages yesterday and hopefully the plan is the same today too. Two of my current reads are pretty big though so actual completed books will be slower but good for acorns regardless.

message 32: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Can we please keep the Complete tab after the Plans tab? It makes sense in my head for Complete to be last. You plan, then you complete!

message 33: by oshizu (new)

oshizu | 96 comments Hello, Team Beet!

oshizu here and happy to join this team, which I was just assigned to this morning.
I'm already in the middle of The Book of Life, which includes ghost and is over 500 pages.

I shall go now to add books (and pages read) to the spreadsheet, but I have a question:
Can each prompt only be filled more than once, like in the recent Amusement Park readathon?
Or do we fill each prompt only once then focus on acorns?

message 34: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 95 comments Welcome Oshizu!

What do you mean be each prompt being filled more than once?

I don't think we can focus on acorns, because we get them by any reading - we don't have to pick and choose whether we use a book for acorns or prompts, we can do both.

message 35: by Nancy (last edited Sep 11, 2022 10:24AM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Yes, you can fill each prompt more than once, that's why each Cornucopia tab has multiple columns. So if you finish a book for 400+ pages for example, go ahead and slot that into column C in the Cornucopia 1 tab.

You don't have to pick cornucopias or acorns, we earn acorns by counting the pages read to get the cornucopias.

Make sense?

message 36: by oshizu (new)

oshizu | 96 comments Thank you, Mahi and Nancy.
You answered my question, Nancy, about being able to fill a prompt more than once.
Since someone had already mentioned filling the ghost prompt, i wasn't sure if I should continue with my doorstopper.

Yes, I understand about not 'choosing' cornucopias, but am unsure how that works. Will the spreadsheet auto-complete the various "3 acorns" prompts, starting from the first cornucopia?

I'll take a closer look at the spreadsheet now.

message 37: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 95 comments We can pick which cornucopia(s) to use our acorns for

message 38: by oshizu (last edited Sep 11, 2022 02:55PM) (new)

oshizu | 96 comments Thanks so much, Mahi.
After reading your response, I (finally) noticed the 3 acorns prompt at the top of each cornucopia!

Edited to add:
I assume our captains assigning the acorns would be easiest?

message 39: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 95 comments We have 3 acorns now!

I "used" them for cornucopia 2 but we can always switch them around.

message 40: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments Just finished Below Zero. It only fits in set in nature (a glacier), so Cornucopia 2. This is my last of these novellas. I'll be starting Vicious which will cover a mostly red cover for #2. I'll look to see if I have any dystopian books so we can finish out one of those Cornucopias.

message 41: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 95 comments I'm reading a dystopian book right now so we're good on that front :)

How was Carrie Soto?

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I loved it, but I love everything she writes.

Samantha | 1585 comments Nancy wrote: "I loved it, but I love everything she writes."

I really enjoy Taylor Jenkins Reid I read her early stuff which was fun but was a little surprised when I heard all the praise for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo but she defiantly came into her own with that one.

I am glad to hear you liked it. I am going on a cruise to Alaska in a few weeks and trying to figure out what I want to read - this has now made the list!

message 45: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments Carrie Soto is the book I was thinking about when watching Serena and her last US Open game and suggesting the game, set, match prompt. If female athlete gets in this round I’ll save it for next year.

message 46: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I've only read one Taylor Jenkins Reid book, but none of her more recent ones that everyone seems to rave about. I probably should give them a try.

I have at least 5 airport/airplane hours tomorrow evening, so should finish my red cover and get through more of both of my other in progress books.

message 47: by oshizu (new)

oshizu | 96 comments I just finished The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness.
it fills the following prompts:
*set in a school
*features a ghost
*about family dynamics

I slotted it for the ghost prompt. In the Completed tab, do we delete other possible fits and highlight only the chosen prompt we in lime green?

Nice!

The Completed tab should highlight the used prompt green automatically (I think it might not have here because the column itself was copied over from the Plans sheet so didn't have the formulas of the Completed sheet).

And keep the other possible fits because it lets us move books around later if needed.

message 49: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I finished Girls Night Out which I put down for another thriller book since it didn't fit any other prompts well.

I made it a lot further in The Poison Song today than I expected so should be finishing that up most likely tomorrow. Hopefully I can get some audiobook hours in at work too. 😀

Hi! There was some confusion in my group about how to complete the cornucopias, so I've updated the first message in your thread to make it a bit clearer. Just wanted to let you know -- the prompts and requirements have not changed, just formatted them to be clearer on the requirements.

Just a reminder that I'm not actively checking all of the threads, so if you have any questions about the way the challenge works, feel free to post in the FAQ thread and I'll get back to you!
